I have a 1992 Pontiac Bonneville with a 3.8L not supercharged. It has a rough idle yet it is fine when on the accelerator. Also it idles between 500-600rpm which seems low to me. After driving it for about 15 minutes the car will sputter and die. It usually will not start back up and even when it does it will idle but if i hit the gas it will sputter and die. It seems to only do this when i am stopped or at low rpm. The car remains inoperable until it has sat for a little while and will start up and run again for about 15 minutes. To my memory it has not done this if i am travelling at a higher speed. I have replaced the Idle Air Control, Throttle Positioning Sensor, Knock Sensor, Camshaft Position Sensor, and even removed my Catalytic Converter because i was getting a sulfur smell and thought maybe it was clogged and stalling the engine when it got hot. At this point i am at a loss and in need of direction. I am thoroughly convinced my idle issue and my stalling issue are tied together. It is NOT throwing an engine light and YES my engine like works. It could be a fuel issue but i am not that knowledgeable about the fuel system of a car. HELP ME PLEASE!!!

Does it have the 2.3l Quad 4 engine? If so replace the plastic piece that the coils go into, they go bad and leak spark to the cam towers and then you get a nice one or multiple cylinder misfire.
Mine did this at one time, and it was only a bad plug wire. Give it a tune up and see if it works. 170k miles is awesome, I have 145k now and it runs great, but had to have ac replaced this week :( Good Luck!!
I have a 2000 Bonneville - I had a problem with the car stalling out - then it did not want to start back up. (When it did it would idle up and down and then die) I changed out the mass air flow sensor - now I have not had a problem. Good luck with it.
clean throttle body intake ,,,run cleaner, thru injectors or carb, check all air hoses and tighten, check air filter,,,check idle air,,,or replace idle air,,,they go bad
I just went through lots of troubleshooting and expense on my 1996. Whenever I would lift my foot off the accelerator and was below about 30 mph, the rpm's would starts jumping around and sometimes it would stall. If I gave it a little gas (accelerator), I could sometimes keep it running. It also backfired once in a while. Starts right back up. Also, if I let it idle while in part, it would die after 1-2 minutes.
I ended up finding a hole in the fuel regulator. About a ~$70 part if you get an AC Delco, but very simple to change.
