Question about 2001 Dodge Grand Caravan

1 Answer

2001 Dodge Grand Caravan 3.3 motor with 150K miles. When stopped at idle the vehicle often -- not always, sputters to less than 400 rpm and then races to over 1200 RMP up and down for 15-20 seconds.

List of items changed in chasing this ghost so far: Fuel Pump assembly; Fuel filter; plugs; plug wires, catalyc converter & exhaust; both oxygen sensors; temperature sensor; EGR valve; throttle positon sensor MAP sensor; battery; air filter. What do you suggest may be the real issue with this vehicle? Thank you.

OK. I ran a test on the EGR valve for 3 days disconnecting the vacuum line and pluggin it. The car ran fine with no problem. I replaced the EGR valve, connected the vacuum line and the problem is back. Actually the car stalled in the driveway.I left eh electrical solenoid connected at all time, but the EGR does not actualte without vacuum. The solenoid is actualted by the PCM, so is it the PCM, or something telling the PCM to actuate the EGR valve?

Could be that your coil pack has gone bad. This is not a cheap piece though, so you will want to be sure.

Does it run fine when up off of idle, or does it also seem to be missing as you drive down the road.

It is possible that you could have a bad spark plug wire, or a bad coil pack. Also it could be your TPS Throttle positioning sensor. Check spark on each wire to verify that you are infact getting spark the whole way across. If you are then I would suggest changing the TPS as it is inexpensive, if that does not help it could be your MAF, ( Mass Aif Flow Sensor) Hope that helps

The idle is not within spec for a grand caravan

You have either a bad idle speed motor or a bad coolant temp. sensor . You also more than likely have a check/service light on as-well . The vehicle will have to be took to the dealer or a good garage to have it scanned & cleared

2001 Dodge Caravan heater blows cold air when stopped

Have you checked the coolant level? What you describe is exactly what happens if the coolant level is low. When stopped at idle, hot coolant is not circulating through the heater core, so no heat. As the engine increases in rpm's when you pull away from the light, the water pump is spinning quicker, and some coolant is making it to the heater core. So check the level, and if it is low, keep an eye on it to see if it drops again. That of course indicates a leak somewhere. Get it fixed, as overheating the engine leads to costly repairs and worse case a new engine. Let me know how you make out with this.

2001 grand caravan high rpm at 70 mph

It sounds like the last gear in your transmission may not be engaging. Caravans are actually famous for tranny problems. Furthermore, be sure to check your transmission fluid while your vehicle is idling. That ensures accuracy. But you may have to get someone to physically look at it to ensure your problem gets solved. Kind of risky diagnosing something so big through typing.
