My 2001 Lincoln LS keeps me a nervous reck. I never know what it is going to do. The car is in very good condition. At 1500 RPM there is a "Whine". the whining; whines as long as the RPM is @ 1500, car speed is around 43 t0 46 mile per/ hour quits @ 1600 above /1400 below, also when I'm driving @ slow RPM in gear 3 and 4 on snowy days the car wants to **** not stall, and continue to run even when I'm driving @ high or low speed.I have no warning when it is going to do this. I've been told the whine is the timing belt, power steering pump, alternator or any belt conponents. Could the whine be my transmission? Could the **** be caused by the whine in the timing belt or transmission? Help/ suggestins.
Run the car from the top of a hill and let it coast at your whining speed. Put it in Neutral, does the whine disappear?
If not its in the drivetrain (wheels, driveshafts, tranny)
Very unlikely to be the timing belt. If it appears at a fixed speed then its drivetrain, if it whines at fixed revs its the engine.
Most likey the transmission I fear....Tires will also make loud whining noise too though...

I tried the solution. I don't if I followed the instruction correctly. I still have the whine @ the RPM listed. The car is functioning OK, not smooth. I hope with the warm weather:it may go away. Thank you for the help. What are your throughts on the timming belt? Lincoln suggested this from the web.
I had the same problem but fixed it 6 months ago finally by replacing the power steering pump! The power steering pump must be strong enough to push the power steering fluid through the hydraulic pump that power the fan that cools down the car while the car is sitting still. Be sure to check the power steering fluid often because it burns out about every six months because it is being used by 2 systems! (the power steering system and the hydraulic fan system! This should definitely fix your problem. The whinning you are hearing from the engine is the power steering pump is dry and out of power steering fluid! This could damage the power steering pump! So first just add power steering fluid and if it continues to run hot then your power steering pump is already damaged and need replacing! It amazed me that something this simple and all these mechanics couldnt figure it out! They ****!
