1998 dodge dakota transmission slipping will not go into overdrive

Just changed the fluid and filter on transmission. It was making a whining sound. was almost like it was going into overdrive took t to advance coded 1740 Torque converter clutch malfunction or solenoid. How do I fix this, do I need to pull the transmission or are the solenoids something I can replace without pulling transmission.

Solenoids are located it the valve body ,none are external

you have to ask the qestion to be able to understand the problem .to think about wheather our not its worth fixing it could a cheap fix our costly. how much do you trust your tech, i would also get a secoand opion kdc744

SOURCE: Trouble code P1740 on 1999 Dodge Ram 2500

I had the same code on my 2001 dodge 2500. The truck wouldn't shift from 3-4. I pulled the trans pan off and replaced a broken spring ($2.00). It is behind a thin plate with 3-4 small torq screws. You don't have to remove the valvebody. Only took me 45 minutes to fix.

I would like to give thanks to Jeff Russel from Teal automotive. He said this is a very common problem. He sells any part for any automatic Transmision and his prices are very affordable.

i think you answered your own question.. torque converter clutch or overdrive solenoid. also your overdrive band could be a little worn and about ready to **** the bed for good but i'd check the other things. if you had transmission work done on it before when they put the torque converter on maybe it didn't get re-seated properly. push and turn it will click do it 2 more times clicking a total of 3 times

While in park and nuetral my tranmission ( auto) on my 99 dakota makes a whining sound ,1st gear it lets up a little ,2nd gear as it is getting ready to shift it makes a high pitch zip sound ,other wise it...

My 2003 dodge caravan whines and when it seems
Hate to tell you this , but sounds like the pump is going in the transmission. First check the fluid level to make sure the fluid is up to full. The fuild and filter need to be replace at 60,000 miles. Clogged transmission filter can restrict the fluid flow into the transmission fluid pump.

First try lucas transmission additive just pour it in make sure your level is acceptable after letting it idle warm. Second try taking it out of overdrive and see if it stops slipping as well you may be losing your torque con.verter if it makes a difference in OD. lucas waork on my astrovan surge problem and lagging OD but it was down on fluid level too. not alot but some.
