You need the engine control module scanned for fault codes as a 1st step.

SOURCE: Check engine light

A multi misfire may mean that one or more of the following has happened:
Faulty spark plug or wires, Faulty coil (pack), Faulty oxygen sensor(s), Faulty fuel injector(s), Stuck/blocked EGR valve / passages, Faulty camshaft position sensor, Defective computer.

The engine is stumbling or hesitating, check all wiring and connectors that lead to the cylinders (i.e. spark plugs). Depending on how long the ignition components have been in the car, it may be a good idea to replace them as part of your regular maintenance schedule. I would suggest spark plugs, spark plug wire, distributor cap, and rotor (if applicable). Otherwise, check the coils (a.k.a. coil packs). In some cases, the the problems were faulty fuel injectors.

Random misfires that jump around from one cylinder to another (read: P030x codes) also will set a P0300 code. The underlying cause is often a lean fuel condition, which may be due to a vacuum leak in the intake manifold or unmetered air getting past the airflow sensor, or an EGR valve that is stuck open.

Good luck and hope this information helps, keep me posted, be glad to help you get the truck running 100% again. Not sure if your running a K&N air filter, and if you are there may be a flim of oil on the MAF sensor that is making you run lean. You may want to spray down the MAF sensor with a can of MAF cleaner.

1997 dodge Dakota pickup truck. it stalls sometimes at idle, and running down the road 70 mph it just cuts out, and dies.

Start with the most basic item: check your compression. Low compression gets lower when an engine gets warm.

If you have an owner's manual, check it to see if your truck is equipped with a shock sensor that can shut off the fuel pump in case of an accident. These will sometimes trip without being activated by a collision or inversion of the vehicle.

Have you relapced the fuel pump and filter? Take it to a garage and have the fuel pump pressure checked. It very common for fuel pumps or a clog in the line to cause this.

I have a Dodge Dakota quad cab-magnum V-8. It started at 77,000 miles with trying to start it and it turned over lots before it would crank. Mechanic says he put 3 different fuel pumps in it but still does...

Yes , it's probably the gas cap - the valve in it is stuck shut so the tank gets under vacuum when you start the engine, lowering the fuel flow. Just replace the cap.

Would like to see where fuel pump is located and if there are fuses or safety switches i need to check before i change pump 1997 dodge dakota

The pump is in the fuel tank. There may be a fuse, check both inside and outside fuse panels. A quick way to check if its working is to take the fuel cap off, put ur ear to the fuel neck and have somebody bump the starter. Most of the time you should be able to hear the pump run for a second and then shut off.

Trouble starting

It could be a power problem or a bad wire splice feeding power to the engine computer. The computer isn't getting enough current to run the injectors or spark until the alternator kicks in. Just an idea....
On mine, it was a splice located next to the battery inside a bundle of wires.
