I have a 2000 chevy malibu. My fan speeds 1 , 2, 3 did not work, soon speed 4 went and speed 5 only worked now none of them work I have no heat now. Before speed 5 stopped it started making a loud noise lasted a few days then died. I have been told replace the blower motor and then I was told replace the resistor, so I wonder which it is? Thanks
If it was the motor that went out then it would not blow at all. The resistor is the culprit that starts killing off speeds. It should be about $25 to $30 at an aftermarket store like autozone or advanced auto parts.
Ok what you explained is that the speeds started not working in order and that is the resistor. I will reitterate that if the blower moter was the problem then every speed would have gone away at the same time and not in order like you stated.
Behind your glove box you should see the blower motor housing, a wiring should be going to the resistor. Just unplug and plug in the new one. Real simple job, just getting to it is about the worst of it.
the resistor will plug into the box with a wire on the end. the wire comes off first the pull the resistor out of the box.
Yes pull the glove box out to gain access to the resistor.

SOURCE: Blower motor or resistor?
Yes its the blower motor resistor.
More then likley theres some trash or something in it, or possibly the motor itself is on it's way out. There not that bad to pull out of that body car, just pull it out and see what you can see.
The blower motor is under the glove compartment
You can replace the resistor on your own. Please find a detailed diagram which would guide you to do it.

I havent pulled them out yet. I had a guy at work tell me it was the resistor and another guy who fixes cars told me it was the blower motor by what I described.
Does anyone have an idea of the cost of a resistor for the heater of a 2000 chevy malibu?
As of 4 days ago it is not blowing at all, I have the vents on for the outside air hopeing it will push some in through, but no matter what setting I put the fan on it does not turn on and nothing is blowing.
OK so is the resistor something I can replace myself? Where would I locate it at? I'm a female but I'm pretty handy.
Would that be when the ducts are by the passengers feet? I just pull the wires down and switch it out?
Thanks to everyone for posting comments. In order to get to the resistor do I have to go through the glove box? Like take the glove box out? I looked under when the passengers feet go and I didnt really see anything there, Or do I just undo any screws under there and go in through there?
How hard is it to get the glove box out? Just a couple screws?
Thank you to everyone who answered my question. I had the car fixed last night and turns out it was... the blower motor, resistor and the fuse for the dial you turn for the fan speeds. So thank you to everyone who answered.
have you pulled the blower and resistor out to inspect them ? i think you will find them both defective from your story . cheers
Had blower resistor replaced and 2 weeks later heater will only work on 5
how do i find and replace the rear fan blower motor resistor.
