Ive changed all the sensors includeing the EGR valve but still wont idle and some times backfires out the exaust like its out of time i put the timming light on it it is 18 degrees advanced ive learned that my freind had put new timmng chain and gears on it years ago and i beleave he had got it out of time by 2 teeth and adjusted the timming by the distributer and it has ran fine up until about 4 weeks ago i even changed distributer cap and rotor button and found that they old rotor button had rubbed into the bottom of the cap what can be wrong im stumped
Do a compression test. The pistons and rings may not seal enough anymore. Try push-starting it in 2nd gear. When you push it ,it will turn the engine faster and build up more compression, enabling combustion to take place. Aslso check if the fuel pressure regulator is not leaking through the vacuum hose, causing it to flood.

This could be a number of things but i think that your problem sounds like a vacuum leak or an EGR problem. Try listening for leaks and try un-plugging the EGR solenoid valve one time.

Check the fuel pressure. You should be at 60-66 psi for the injectors to fuel properly. Depending on where you are in the country, some areas have more moisture in their fuels that others. Try running a can of Techron fuel treatment every third tank of fuel. Make sure your getting fuel at a good station. Stations that do not maintain their tanks and buy discount fuels usually help shorten the life of fuel pumps.

This may be due to a bad coil wire shorting out GM had many problems with these ..There was even a recall for this a long time ago.. The wire would short out on the metal foil on the doghouse and the aluminum a/c line if there was any damage or corrosion to the terminals...A new distributor ...I had an apprentice put one in one time and he thought the rotor was to point to #1 and forgot the dist cap was like a printed circut board and the rotor was no wheres near #1 good luck

This engine may just be wore out. Did you check the compression?
