Hi Tara , Sounds like you have lifter problems with the clicking noise, do you change the oil regularly ? How many miles on this vehicle ? The idle problem or engine shutting off cold could be because of a coolant temperature sensor problem ! When cold the engine needs more fuel to operate properly , the coolant temp. sensor tells the engine computer what the temp. of the engine is , when cold the computer richens the fuel mixture !
Sounds a little bit like it could be the idle speed set too low. Should be 750 to 775 RPM at warm idle.

Maybe it's the transmission itself. check it.

it can be couple of thing Try a fuel injector cleaner or new fuel injectors.it can be vacuum leak. Engines need a vacuum
to run especially at idle which is when your car dies. It could be a stuck
EGR.
If the check engine light comes on it will store a code so take it to a
shop and pay them to read the codes. This may give you a starting point.

had the same problem it was the u joints....if you get a vibration at higher speeds that will also be an indicater...on the 2005 exterras you have to replace the whole drive cshaft fortunatly min was under drive train warranty.

From what you are describing it sounds like it must be a valve lifter sticking. Try putting a cup of transmission oil in your crankcase, or pick up some suitable additive from your local parts store. I wish i could hear it and give you a better idea. Maybe let them listen to it at the parts store, and they can determine if it's a lifter or not. Let me know how you make out.

you have either a lifter collapsed or a rocker arm backed off!! or a lobe flat on the camm pull the valve cover and check the rockers
