How to test Engine coolant temperature sensor?
------------------
Hi I have the same problems, losing coolant and burning rubber smell. TBH I didnt think they were linked. I'm thinking burning rubber was normal if the journey was long and the tyres may have been warm? I dont know what is causing the coolant level to drop.
Did you resolve this? if so how please?

It sounds to me like your thermosdate is not opening and it should be replaced.
I've had two Mercury Villagers - I love them, I think they are great cars!
I think the problem your having is a bad injector. You can measure the resistance of each injector, they are suppose to be within a certain tolerance I forget what that is.
The burning rubber smell is because you have raw fuel going into the catalytic converter, this causes the converter to get very hot.
What I've found is that if you use a fuel system cleaner or an injector cleaner - then use only high-grade gas it will usually work as well.
I've also found that you can get re-built injectors for a pretty reasonable price. Installing the front three is not much work, but the rear three are worth paying for someone else to do it. Just google "rebuilt injectors" and you'll find lots of places.

What makes you sure its the bearing? Sound like your brake to me? Is the brake disc or brake drum a rusty red colour?

Hello
The engine
and transmission in this cars drive train are fully
electronically controlled by a computer called the PCM (Power Train
Control Module). Whenever a problem like this occurs the computer
stores a record of the problem (there are of course some exceptions
to this, like the fuel pump, engine coolant temperature sensor and
MAF sensor for instance) in the form of a fault code in its memory,
to read these fault codes you must have the systems memory scanned
with a special tool. Once the fault code(s) are read you then must
perform the appropriate diagnostic testing to find and resolve the
problem(s) DO NOT REPLACE ANY PARTS UNTIL A TRAINED TECHNICAIN
HAS DIAGNOSED THE PROBLEM TO AVOID SPEDING YOUR HARD EARNED MONEY ON
PARTS THAT MAY NOT CORRECT THE PROBLEM
