SOURCE: Dodge 4x4 Doesn't Engage

It's probably the actuator located on the front axle on the passenger side. Also, check all your vacuum lines to make sure there's no broken or leaking lines.

I do not have the solution for you but I will make a suggestion if you do not get an answer from someone else. Find a 2000 Dodge Caravan like yours at a used car lot and pop the hood and take a look. That may be your quickest solution.

2001 dodge ram 1500 4x4 vacuum hose and line placement diagram

Here is a general vacuum hose and line placement diagram for a 2001 Dodge Ram 1500 4x4:

1. The vacuum line from the engine intake manifold should be connected to the vacuum reservoir tank.
2. The vacuum line from the vacuum reservoir tank should be connected to the vacuum actuator on the front axle.
3. The vacuum line from the vacuum actuator on the front axle should be connected to the transfer case.
4. The vacuum line from the transfer case should be connected to the vacuum actuator on the rear axle.
5. The vacuum line from the vacuum actuator on the rear axle should be connected to the vacuum reservoir tank.

It is important to note that the specific placement and routing of vacuum hoses and lines can vary depending on the make and model of your Dodge Ram 1500, as well as any modifications that may have been made to the vehicle. It is always recommended to refer to the manufacturer's instructions or a repair manual specific to your vehicle for accurate information. Additionally, it may be helpful to take pictures or label the hoses and lines before removing them to ensure proper reinstallation.

Seems like it engages in gear fine but will not go in 2 wheel drive. but does fine in 4. Could something be wrong with tranny or just a bad rear end?

check linkage or cable at transfer case, it may need adjusting. if not.its the transfer case that needs attention. check all lines to transfer case. God-Bless! The vacuum lines from engine if needed.

Where do the vaccum lines go into the transfer case on a 2002 RAM 3500? I need a diagram of the vaccum lines into the transfer case.

Vacuum lines do not actually go into the transfer case, they go to the 4x4 actuator and there is a vent hose at the top...that is about it.

I have a 4wd 98 ram 1500 360 and when i move the shifter it will not go into 4wd, the light doesn't come on or anything its like its not even there i believe it may be the vacuum lines but i dont know...

Pistol09pete,

It sounds like you have a problem with the vacuum lines that travel from the transfer case (these should be color coded lines that are green, red, and black). Goodluck

Where doe sthe vaccum line plug into the transfer case

There is a vacuum switch where the three vacuum line plugs in to and that is located on the driver's side on top of the transfer case. Most of the time the vacuum switch goes bad and needs to be replace and goes for around $25.00 at Napa or Auto Zone and takes about 20 min to replace from start to finish. It's a tight fit for the open end wrench but it can be done, good luck and Merry Xmas.

I have a 91 s10 Blazer 4.3 4x4. I need to find out where the vacuum lines go from the switch on the transfer case to the engine go. When I got the Blazer the vacuum lines were gone.

You should go to a salvage yard and get the plug that plugs into the top of the transfer case.It is a 3 line plug and it is a molded rubber plug. The lines go to the actuator.Which is under the battery tray. The other goes to engine vacuum. The other tees off to the vent pipe on the rear of the transfer case and atmosphere. That`s why I suggested the salvage yard.Hope this helps.Good luck.

Transfer case wont engage

shift into 4wd and move truck a couple of feet.
if light is still off, park truck block the wheels set the park brake jack right front wheel and try to hand spin the wheel if wheel doesn't turn 4x4 is functioning properly but there is a wiring problem use an ohmmeter to check the 4x4 switch wiring fuse and bulb
if wheel turns freely the front axle or transfer case is not engaged
attempt to hand spin the front driveshft if the driveshaft will spin the transfer case is not engaged check the transfer case shift linkage, problem is in linkage or transfer case internals
if the driveshaft will not spin the transfer case is engaged properly
with trnsmission in neutral or park start engine measure vacuum on the two vac lines at front axle shift motor . one line should have approx 20" vacuum. other line should have none
if no vacuum measured look for vac leak or bad vac switch
if both lines have vac look for a bad vac swithc or ruptured cad actuator diaphragm
if one line has 20" +- VAC
move transfer case lever to 2wd measure vac again lines should have swapped vac signals
if no vac switch bad or 4wd shift likage needs adjusting
if yes vac motor bad or stuck or shift fork stuck
remove vac shift motor from the axle attach vac lines to shift motor engage disengage 4wd
does shift motor plunger move at least 1/2 inch
no shift motor bad
yes check axle shift fork and vac motor for binging

4wd

It sounds like you may have vacuum problem. There are several places you need to check. FIrst check the vacuum line from the engine to the tranfer case. Then check the vacuum lines from the transfer case to the front differntial. If all lines check good, there is a vacuum swith on the top of the transfer case that may be the cuase of your problem.
