then the seloniod actuator if the front diff may be bad, this is common,heres a diagram to show you what it is and where it is, hope this helps.3e85522.gif

Mr D is on the right track, but the popper thingy (4 wheel drive actuator ) is located in the front axle on the right axle tube. It has the 2 wires going to it and threads in and out with normal (right hand) thread. No danger in removing it, nothing will fall out or cause worse probs. The actuator is filled with a gas that expands when current is applied to a heating element. Your gas has leaked out. The GM fix is to install an electric motor actuator like they started in 98 or 99. Not sure if you can obtain the gas filled yet or not. Anyway once it is out shift the vehicle to 4 wheel drive and see if the actuator moves, yours won't. Good luck finding one or see a GM parts store they can get the electric one with new upgraded wire harnes and instructions.

Service 4 wheel drive on 2004 Chevy Tahoe
The 4X4 system is controlled by a electronic control module . Can set a number of DTC'S - diagnostic trouble code's . Having the vehicle check for DTC'S would be your best bet ! Not at autozone or advance or any parts stores . They can not pull these code's . Need a factory or professional scanner . Your best bet , take it to a qualified repair shop.

My 05 Chevy 4 wheel drive will not engage, the light on the button just blinks, you can here it try to engage. I have replaced the switch and nothing happened.
Hi, the actuator for the 4X4 is bad . It should run around $50 for the part .. If you are mechanically inclined, you can switch it out . It is mounted on the transfer case and looks like a small starter. Before you replace check the fuse located on the drivers side door panel. You will see 4X4..fuse i believe 30 amp, replace the fuse and if it does not solve the problem then you have to change the actuator as i have said earlier....

96 tahoe 4x4 not engaging the front wheels and the light in the dashboard for the 4x4 does not come on ethier but the transfer case does feel like in 4x4 mode

2005 chevy tahoe cruise control not working, no blown fuses
The BRAIN BOX which is known by most car owners controls the throttle boy accellerations control when engaging the cruise control on. If your fuses are good I recomend have the servo (brain box) checked
