From the timing belt to the transmission the fireing orders are 1234 One and three fired the same time 2 and 4 fire the same time. Pull all the plugs for the spark plug on them and lay them across the top of the motor with plugs in them you can see which ones fire at what time. The spark plugs need to be touching a grounded part of the engine to fire. This also will help you find out if you have bad wires.
hi from the uk assume you are asking for cambelt timing belt set up for galant 2 ltr 16 valve petrol ?? as this setting up is also relating tooil pump and the balance shaft set up of marks you would be best with full instructions and a diagram i can scan and e mail to you these if you wish free! if you forward an e m address i can send to it is now 2 pm here in uk
I hate to have to tell you this, but the 2.4L (4g64) is an interference engine. That means when the timing belt broke, the pistons hit the valves, causing at least a few of them to bend.
here is the overhaul section of the factory service manual for the 2.4L. its technically from the eclipse manual but it will work for the galant. The intake manifold and exhaust manifolds may not be the same but the head, block and timing belt sections are exactly the same. http://tearstone.com/eclipsefsm/GR00007100-11B.pdf
also here is a walk thru (with pics) for the timing belt procedure: denlorstools com
The timing marks are inside the belt cover. You have to bring the #1 piston all the way to the top of it's travel, this is called Top Dead Center or TDC. All other timing critical pulleys are marked, if you can't see them, clean them.

Your car will have the 2.4L SOHC engine in it (AKA 4G64). This manual will show you how to replace the timing belt (and more). Timing belt procedures start on page 33.
i was able to google it. just type in timing belt diagram 1996 misubishi galant.and then just look up your engine size which u didnt state. If u dont know what size engine u have it's on a sticker under the hood.
If the timing belt broke, he should take it to have it replaced because theres more than likely to be bent valves in the head. Heads should be checked before putting another timeing belt on. If there is valve damage, then more than likely there damage to the pistons too.
