Have 1999 BMW 328i bought recently. Had oil changed & standard Pennzoil 10W40 instead of the BMW APPROVED synthetic oil which had been used in vehicle by previous owner - car has 147K miles. Car now running rough. Could there be engine or other part damage caused by switch from synthetic to standard oil????

from ignition key position 1 , the right hand side trip button on your speedo shut be twisted right to advance the time, the longer you hold it ,the faster it will go,when desired time is reached, press the button inwards to set, switch off ignition and press the button, the time should display for few seconds.

I had the same issue with my 2000 528i. You more than likely need to have the Vanos seals replaced. BMW will tell you that the Vanos unit needs to be replaced but the problem is more than likely isolated to the OEM seals that shipped with the Vanos. This issue has been reported by several BMW owners. This issue has been thoroughly documented and reported to BMW in an effort to seek a corrective fix. Since BMW failed to address the problem, the guys that investigated the issue started their own company providing superior Vanos seals to the deficient OEM Vanos seals.
The company is Beisan Systems, LLC. I ordered their Vanos seal kit and had them installed at a local BMW performance shop for less than half of what BMW wanted to charge me for a Vanos replacement with the same faulty seals. Besian also provides step-by-step DIY instructions; if you have the time.

Good Luck.

Did you replace your fuel filter when you did the pump? At lower RPM's the engine would be starving for fuel. Another cause could be your throttle position sensor. It is what shifts your transmission at predetermined shift points as you throttle up and down. It is also what kicks down your engine when you are stopping or slowing down as you go down through the gears. Hope that helps!

Look for Castrol TWS 10W60 Motor Oil. This car should not burn so much oil, you need to use a different kind. It is recommended by BMW as well. I also heard the VANOS isnt an issue anymore, can be fixed with a different MAFF. Good luck!

Sounds like a bad motor mount, pop the hood and see if the motor shakes or moves rapidly when u put it in gear holding down the brake.
