2000 grand marquis driver's side windshield wiper lifts off windshield

Thought wiper arm spring must be weak but swapped it with passenger side wiper arm and it too exhibited the same problem. Driver's side wiper arm still not pressing blade hard enough against the windshield even though wiper arm I pulled off the driver's side now has plenty of pressure against the glass on the passenger side. Tried swapping in the entire w/s wiper transmission linkage out of a boneyard, but it did the same thing as the original wiper trans linkage did. Finally had enough and stuffed a small block of wood between the driver's side bottom of the molded plastic linkage frame enough to lift the whole thing enough to put a moderate amount of pressure behind the wiper blade so it will at least wipe the glass adequately at city street speeds but with winter weather coming I was hoping to fix it right but don't know what I need to do to get it right. I appreciate whatever help you can give me.

Hello Steve,

From your post, "Finally had enough and stuffed a small block of wood between the driver's side bottom of the molded plastic linkage frame enough to lift the whole thing enough to put a moderate amount of pressure behind the wiper blade..", it sounds like this box is warped or somehow out of alignment. Is it possible for you to buy this box from a wrecking yard? Has you car ever been in a collision? If so the frame may have so un-repaired buckling resulting in the misalignment.

1996 Mercury Grand Marquis wipers don't work. I changed the motor and the fuse isn't blown

You need to take the plastic cowls off that cover the wiper arm linkage and wiper transmission to inspect it...cowl is held on with 3 Phillips screws near windshield and some one inch wide metal clips, take off the gasket that fits on top. If both are not working check the transmission where linkages attach, if one wiper blade is not working it is usually the drivers side where the nylon bushing that forns a ball/socket sort of connection fails due to build up of debris and the rusting of parts that follows, let me know if this helps.

Windshield wipers going to far

If it's only doing this on the driver's side, you should be able to remove the arm and reinstall it "clocked" in a different position.I believe you can remove the arm by pulling it away from the windshield (it's spring loaded),and use a small screwdriver to lift the retainer at the base of the arm.Pull the arm off slowly, and then reinstall it one spline counter-clockwise.You may have to do this a couple of times to get it in the right spot.

Windshield wipers travel past the driver side window:

There is a tool for that, to take the spring tension off the arm

You can still wrestle it off, by lifting the arm off windshield
& on the arms right side & under it ,is a small tab you slide
out.

Then the arm comes off & you can reinstall in a different place

1997 mercury grand marquis wipers

We have the same problem on our 97 Grand Marquis. We have replaced the wiper blades and the drivers wiper arm with a used one. The problem was not completely solved but it did work better. We are going to replace the arm with a new one and see if that works better.

Where is windshield wiper motor for 1992 mercury grand marquis

1992-98 Vehicles
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Remove the rear hood seal. Remove the wiper arm assemblies by raising the wiper blade off the windshield. Move the slide latch away from the pivot shaft and slowly lower the arm onto the latch. This unlocks the arm from the pivot shaft and holds the blade off the glass. Pull the arm from the pivot shaft.
  3. Remove the cowl vent screws and disconnect the washer hoses from the washer jets.
  4. Detach the electrical connectors from the wiper motor.
  5. Remove the wiper assembly attaching screws, lift the assembly out and disconnect the washer hose.
  6. Unsnap and remove the linkage cover.
  7. Remove the wiper module assembly retaining bolts and remove the module from the vehicle.
  8. Remove the linkage retaining clip from the motor operating arm by lifting the locking tab and pulling the clip away from the pin.
  9. Remove the motor retaining screws and remove the motor from the vehicle.
  10. The installation is the reverse of the removal.

How do I obtain more pressure against the windshield with my wiper blade, drivers side.

The spring pressure is applied from the base of the arm - not the blade. You may need to replace the arm - it isn't difficult to remove - there is a small sliding lock holding it onto the shaft - lift the locking piece (may require pliers) and coax the arm off.
