Transmission slips starting in 4X4

well; all those p07xx codes are hard transmission errors
or shifter errors.
check levels yet on the tranny, not look like tar or smell burnt?
do it by the book do not guess, how. or horrible errors happen.

tranny 42RLE or 45RFE used .then.
P0731, means 1st gear ratio wrong. (means slipping)
732 means 2nd gear slips.
734 means 4th gear slips.

the causes are many
why are you not asking any shop to diagnose it
box leaks and leaked out ATF , and is way too low.
box pump is bad, weak.

he will scan it first . and even see more errors than you saw.

no miles on car told 20 year old and 250,000 miles on it ,or more?

check cv/"U" joints in axles and drive lines If you are on hard surface do not engage 4wd as it creates torque wind up in the transmission and diffs and drive lines. It is to only be used on slippery surfaces that allow the wheels to even put the torque wind up by slipping on the surface

try coasting at 10 mph, place transmission in neutral and try placing in 4 wheel low while rolling at 10 mph then if selector moves you can then put transmission back in drive .same way going back to hi 4

Did you check your ATF level? I have an ATF leak somewhere and when my ATF gets really low my auto trans will keep slipping out of gear until I dump another quart or two of ATF fluid into the trans.

I have the same problem with a 2005 Ford crew cab . Thank you.

When it does this, Reverse works fine? How about low 2?

reading what your saying, the problem started when you topped up with fluid; from experience what you have done is over filled the system which can build up high pressure and burst the oil seals and contamanate the drive plate.if your happy with what youve removed it might come back ok.but i suspect burst oil seal failure causing contamanation. thanks adrian

I have to stop, engage 4H or 4L, and shift into nuetral and then the front gear box will then engage and you can hear it from nuetral and the engine at idle, it will slip into gear, if not, in gear go slow with 4x4 light "on" and while rolling slip into nuetral and then back into D, Some transfer cases will not engage in Overdrive, the D with a circle around it so shift into 3rd gear the one to the right of the D with a circle around it. 4 H has a speed limit, and do not shift into 4L while on pavement or you can do some damage.
