I drive a 1996 Nissan 200SX. The engine light is on and won't go off. It's NEVER done that before. The engine cuts out, while I'm driving - the air conditioner exacerbates the problem, but it's still present now even when I turn off the AC. This just started today.

if this is an automatic there will be a dip stick if it is a manual you do not use transmission fluid to find out what sencor is bad take car to advance auto parts they have a digatal reader and can tell wou what sencer went bad and where it is located

Check your battery terminals, if they're corroded replace them. That did it when I was having this problem.

You will need to get the computer in car "scanned' to detect which component is faulty.
I wiould guess at an air flow sensor / temp sensor / throttle body.
