96 chevy pickup cranks for a long time before it starts. what gives?

My chevy used to start right up, but now it has to crank 5 or 6 times and then it starts. What would be causing the slowing of starting my truck?

FUEL PUMP RELAY SENDS POWER TO FUEL PUMP FOR COUPLE SECONDS WHEN YOU FIRST TURN KEY ON(BEFORE CRANKING) SEE IF YOU CAN HEAR PUMP COME ON, ONCE YOU START CRANKING PUMP SHOULD RUN. THEN ONCE YOU GET OIL PRESSURE PUMP WILL ALSO BE TURNED ON. IF RELAY IS BAD, FUEL PUMP WILL NOT GET POWER UNTIL ENGINE GETS OIL PRESSURE. THIS WILL CAUSE SLOW START. IF YOU CAN HEAR FUEL PUMP THE FUEL PRESSURE MAY BE LEAKING DOWN.

Pull the vac line off the regulator right after you stop the engine. See if there is gas in the vac line if so the regulator is bad. If no gas is present it could be the check valve in the fuel pump letting the gas pressure leak down. Get a set of gauges and hook up to the fuel lines and check for pressure loss. You will have some loss but should hold steady for several hours. Another thing to try is turn the key on and off several times before trying to start this will charge the lines if this works every time you are losing fuel pressure. If you still have trouble when doing this I would look somewhere else besides the fuel system

sounds like ignition module inside of distributor cap under distributor rotor button.these do go bad and can easily be replaced.strong suspicion from your details that this is the culprit.

SOURCE: 96 Chev Silverado having to crank 3 - 4 times before start

Well the only thing i can think of is when your fuel is below half a tank the pressure relief valve and a rubber hose between the pump and the fuel line is exposed. Its possible your fuel is leaking back into the gas tank as it sits overnight, ect. You may want to perform a fuel pressure check when the the gas is at 1/4 tank and been sitting for awhile, pressure should hit 55 seconds after key is turned to run position.

Truck crank over but won't start no spark and fuel pressure

Hi Dennis , what make ,model an year truck do you have ? There are some other things to consider on other make vehicles . No spark an no fuel together on a dodge or Chrysler vehicle would suggest a ASD Relay ! On ford there is a relay also , but the name I just don't remember right off the top of my head an I don't feel like opening my ford service info software right at the moment !

1989 Chevy 2500 pickup. Two months ago I was driving and truck just died. After it cooled off it would crank for maybe 5 seconds then would not crank. Replaced plugs, wires, cap, rotor, and coil. Still...

You can have the coil and module tested at most auto parts stores. The module provides the ground signal to the coil. It could also be the pickup coil in the bottom of the distributor.

My !978 chevy pickup has new distributor and carburator. I can hear it firng but it won't start

gyver here , twenty year wrencher.. sounds like either you got the timing out on the distributor , or the timing on the crank and cam are off. if you know the timing marks were set cam at twelve crank at six the dist is out. common for guys to set cam and crank n marks one above the other but then you must rotate engine 360 degree before you set dist back into hole. pull dist up rotate 180 degree .let me know

Engine experiences extended cranking to start it at times

Listen at the fuel tank when the key is turned on. The pump should run for a short time and shut off. If it continues to run, the pump is worn out and should be replaced. The fuel filter should be replaced if it hasn't been done lately.

96 S-10 Vortec 4.3 Cranks over but wont start

Your starter could be starting to go south on you.  You are having to crank it multiple times becuase it isn't spinning fast enough the first time to start the engine.  When you crank it several times it heats up the starter and it will spin a little bit faster.  Take the starter to your parts store and have them check it out for you.  They should do it for free.  Let me know if you have more questions.  Thanks for an honest rating and for using FixYa!
