Question about 2004 Ford Ranger

MY 2004 Ford Ranger engine turns over but wont start.

Fuel pump is working. Previously I had issues with it not starting so I pressed the fuel reset button, it would start. Now, however, the reset button is not fixing the problem, and even though the engine will turn over but it will not start and run. Any suggestions?

SPARK OR FUEL!
FIRST CHECK THAT YOU HAVE AMPLE SPARK FROM THE COIL, COIL PACKS, ETC... TO THE PLUGS
RUN A FUEL PUMP PRESSURE TEST IF SPARK IS O.K.
NEXT IF IT IS A THROTTLE BODY INJECTION...VISUALLY INSPECT THAT A SPRAY OF FUEL IS GOING INTO THROTTLE BODY WHEN THROTTLE CABLE IS TURNED WITH IGNITION ON

Fuses are good. The engine hums mildly when I turn the key to power the battery.

i was once pulling a trailer with a ranger when it suddenly lost power and the engine died. turns out the problem was with the fuel shut off inertia switch. the switch is supposed to activate in case of accident. on my model the inertia switch is located in the passenger side under the glove box. dont know where yours is located. once you find it, just push the button and see if it resets. good luck.

if you can hear the pump working the first thing I would do is ask your self when was last time fuel filter was changed and you gave it a good tune up and replaced the drive belt

before replacing the starter get a volt meter and test the voltage coming out of the voltage regulator which the power comes from the battery to the regulator down to the starter also make sure all wires on the starter are clean and what I mean is from rust because I had an f150 that did the same thing

I do believe the FORD is located under ther hood either on the firewall or on L/S wheel housing. Have encountered many , many faulty control modules. There came a time if you came across a Ford product with a no start, you automatically suspected it, and 90% of the time you were right.

I agree with Steve, I'd use a gage and check proper fuel pressure. You may need fresh fuel? I looked at info for 3.0L engine, says fuel pressure, 60--65 psi.
There shows to be a Schrader valve on fuel rail to attach fuel pressure gage, make sure no pressure, first, attach gage, then turn on the key.

schrader valve-rlqz2ijpum53iiza33suipnb-2-0.jpg You may need to check fuel injector pulse, if fuel pressure is ok.

Do you know what the fuel pressure is at?

Try this. While somebody cranks the engine over whack the bottom of the fuel tank (about dead center) with a rubber mallet. If the vehicle starts replace the pump. The fuel pump is kept cool by the fuel in the tank. Running the tank dry is hard on the fuel pump.

a lot of times if u turn the key on and off without startig the engine in a quiet area you will hear the fuel pump kick on do this a few times then try to start the engine. If you cant hear the fuel pump that may be the problem, another solution would be to remove the injecters and clean them

Check your battery, especially if it is older. Had same problem with 2007 Ranger.
It seems that there may be enough power in the battery to turn on daytime running lights, instrument cluster etc., and turn the engine over, but during all that, there may not be enough power left to adequately power the fuel pump.
After replacing a 9 year old battery, I had no more problems with my fuel pump (almost 1 year since battery was changed and no fuel pump issues).
