No do not disconnect it. It is probably a coolent temp sencer that wiwill need to be replaced they in general are located by the thermostat they are ussally easy to change
could it be your crank sensor?
having a similar problem with a dakota. dodge tells me it may be the dist, but seeing as how you replaced it with a new one it could be that the sensor needs replacing

Inspect/Test/Replace
Because ECT (engine coolant temperature) sensor procedures vary depending upon their location, first locate the part. You may need to partially drain the engine coolant to prevent coolant spillage.
Disconnect the negative battery cable.
Unplug the ECT.
Then, unscrew it.
Reverse the removal procedures to install the new part.
Connect the negative battery cable to the battery.
YOUR ENGINE OPERATING RATING TEMPERATURE SUPPOSE TO BE 190 TO 200 DEGREES. IF COOLANT SENSOR DEGREES IS SHOWING 190 OR 200 DEGREES IT WORKING.THAT RIGHT.IF ITS SHOWING 60 OR 80 DEGREES IT FAULTY. AND ENGINE WILL RUN POORLY.
it could be a leaking injector. these years are known for them. do you still have the old style lift pump mounted on the block, or is it in the tank already
had the same problem except cruse control wouldn't work either. after checking all the relays and fuses the problem turned out to be moisture in the ECM plugs.
