I was coming home yesterday. Took off from a stop light and got going down the highway. After i let off the gas, check engine light starts blinking. The car is now running very rough. The whole vehicle shuddered if i gave it some gas. The exhaust note changed also and it smells funny too. It seems to me like i am miss-firing a cylinder. I am going to check the spark plugs (Autolite coppers changed 4000 miles ago) and the coilpacks as well as plung in my ODBII code reader. The car will still start, but I'm not driving it anywhere for now.
Check the faults on your code reader, if you do have a misfire on a particular cylinder try swapping coil packs and see if the misfire changes cylinder. Is it a 2.0 turbo? I have come across many with air leaks, causing rough running.
I think the auto-lite plugs are probably your problem. yes it sounds like mis-firing. That's one of the few times the check engine light flashes. I'd suggest changing the plugs to a NGK plug, that's the ONLY plug we use in our Audi's and VW's (work at a VW/Audi shop). Try that, and it should take care of the rough running, if not, it will probably need coils too.
