The 1998 had the AX4S transmission and the 2002 has the AX4N transmission. Simply put, it may physically "fit" but the transmissions do not interchange without substantial issues (mostly due to computer differences and the two having different driven sprocket tooth counts, you'll get a number of error codes at a minimum).

Here's an article that may help. It clarifies the driven sprocket tooth count issue that may or may not be an issue for you.

Yes it will but u may need to change the powertrain control module (computer) to make it work correctly.

1995 Ford Windstar transmission is slipping and shifting hard

bad news, 1995 ford windstar transmissions fail extremely frequently at about 60000 miles, I would not waste money in a transmission flush as it will most likely not correct the problem. It is a dsign flaw, the transmission cannot handle the torque of the 3,8L engine and the 700Lbs of added weight of the windstar body.
I'd just use it untill it fails...

Starter issues with 98 Ford Windstar (3.8)

one problem that the 98 winstars ( 3,8L ) are prone to is the transmission range sensor. they are badly located and not well sealed. As a result corosion...
The starter solenoid wire ( red/ light blue ) runs throught the range sensor before reaching the ignition switch.
Try shifting back and forth between Park and L1 rapedly at least 5, 6 times and then try starting in Neutral.
If it starts the TRS is easy to replace and accesible.
( The TRS is also responsible for the transmission going into irradical kick down mode )
