SOURCE: 1998 jimmy 4 wheel drive problem

are any of the lites on the switch flashing? you may have a sticking 4x4 shift motor on the transfer case. with a helper, key on someone under vehicle at shift motor, one operating the 2wd button, give shift motor a rap with small hammer on metal portion of shift motor to see if you hear it trying to work. to access control module, remove plastic right kick panel and its right there. remove connector and inspect for corrosion or bad connection. also try park and neutral, may even have to be rolling a bit to disengage. let me know how you make out and will help further if i can. do you know what transfer case system you have? np1 or np4?

SOURCE: 4wd will not engage on my 1996 GMC Sierra 1500 pickup

Ok the drive shaft will spin thats good. remove the front driff actuator and see if the plunger extents. if it doesn't check that the power and grond ar ok. If they are then replace the actuator. Just so you know the two actuator may be diffrent. If it has been replaced no problem. If it hasn't ever been replaced then ther is a updated part it come as a kit witha harness spacer and actuator.

Testimonial: "Fixya pointed me in the right direction to find the problem. It was in fact the front actuator which was not expanding. The 4wd is working. Thanks."

On my 1999 gmc jimmy the lights on 4wd switch are out and 4wd wont engage. the switch is good(tried it in my 2001 Sonoma)and the 2 switches at transfer case were changed still nothing. Any clues?

On my 01 Yukon it was the switch in the dash. I took it apart abd found several bad soldier Joints. I found the same problem in the rear AC controller module. You can buy a new module or take yours apart

4wd service light in dash just came on. cannot put into 4wd.

There are actuators on the front axle and the transfer case, check them both.

For 4x4 gmc sonoma is the 4 wheel drive light is always supposed to be on

It's only suppose to be on when the 4WD is in use and should be off when in 2WD. If the light is on, replace the 4WD switch on top of the transfer case, drivers side. You can pick up the vacuum switch at Auto Zone, Napa for around $25.00 and is common to fail. When they fail, the vacuum to the front axle hub actuator will stay engaged and the axle will always be engaged. it's a simple fix and should take you 15min to replace if you can get under the Sonoma with out jacking it up off the ground.

Disconnect the vacuum line from the switch and unscrew the switch out from the transfer case with a 3/4 inch wrench i believe. No need to worry about Teflon tape, the switch is tapered and will not leak fluid.

Good luck and thank you for using Fixya.

Engaging from 2WD - 4HI/Lo requires movement of the vehicle. very low speed under 5mph, push button should engage. the vehicle has to be moving.
