I have a 99 cougar and when I crank it and drive the motor light comes on and stays on. The car has no other problems other than that. I drives fine makes no noises. What can this be and why????
well i can safely say it is an emissions related issue , not always causing a drive-ability issue , if you have autozone store in your neighborhood stop in and let them check it for you , and explain it for you .

Engine light will stay on until the engine starts. Its a self test of the system. As far as it not starting it sounds like the ignition modual in the distributor has gone bad. (common in 90's) Also the control modual on the drivers side fenderwell is also known to burn out. Both control spark.
When you turn the key on, does your charge light come on? When working right, the charge light comes on with key on, then when started and alternator is working, the charge light (or battery icon, whatever) will go out. If that light doesn't come on, it may have a burnt bulb or wiring problem, and that will keep car from charging.
If that's alright, you must have a loose connection or wire not connected between your battery and alternator. Also, check your grounds: battery, engine to frame, ECM (likely on top of engine).
hey that sounds familiar!have you checked your idle control sensor? let me tell you 1st you crank it cold, you have to keep your foot on the gas pedal until it warms up.but then when you come up to red light quick stop, the engine dies or wants to stop? sometimes it starts fine? but when it does, after running for a few minutes,it idles up and down? when it's warm after driving 15miles or so,you shut it off and try a restart, and the engine starts, but idles up and down? all of the above are signs of a bad idle control sensor.the part costs about $20.00 u.s. 2bolts removal 1 PLUG IN REMOVAL you may be able to do it yourself.have an autozone or advance autoparts store employee show you where it's located.you would be shocked at how many great people there are left in the world! i'm answering your question for free at midnight from the u.s. think i'm bored? no. just love helping people like you! thank you so much!
Your alternator isn't putting 14 volts out to the battery. Check the stator wire on the alternator and the 3 wire plug make sure there is no gap on any of the alternator connectors and they are on VERY firm!
Hook up a multimeter inside your car and watch the battery voltage! if under 14volt you got an alternator problem!
V6 ? 4CYL? Have you verified SPARK? Did anyone check the "fuel pump inertia switch?" Its in the right front kick panel. If it was a "Anti-theft Issue" the light would be on or flashing.
your ac compressor might be locked up remove belt and trun over and if it starts, then great, do not drive it tho with out belt on, i had this same problem,
