Take a look at the spark plugs to see if they are oil on them or carbon build up from oil... if that is true... oil rings maybe bad... an old trick that sometimes work is to raise rpm to 2500 and hold for a little bit just before they plug the sniffer in.

Have a scanner hooked up to your car and do a data stream to see if your knock sensor is still working. On a heavy load, if the ECM detects detenation in the engine, it will automatically want to ****** the timing to make it run better on a load.

SOURCE: car wont start

At first, I thought 'coil pack'. But you said it tried to start. So that's out. You might check that you're getting spark just to be thorough.

Did it ever start again after the stall on the interstate?

If not, I'm leaning towards the timing chain.

What happens if your timing chain broke:

  • The timing chain no longer turns the cam(s)
  • The cam(s) no longer open/close the valves
  • The valves become stationary, remaining open or closed depending on the position of the cam(s)
  • If even one valve is open in a cylinder, no compression.
  • No compression, no start.
How do you confirm this without tearing apart your engine?

Do a compression test on all cylinders. If only one or two have compression (or one or more have zero compression), I'm tipping over towards the timing chain.

Have a compression test done.

Hope this helps

SOURCE: Saturn 2000 SC1 failed emission test high NOX, put

I'd change fuel filter, get it low on fuel. Add a bottle of rite aid 100% rubbing alcohol. Nothing fancy. Nothing scented or colored.

Add it and fill up your tank of gas.

I've done this with old cars and trucks.

Most recent was my 77 for highboy. Emmissions guy said it's emmissions were lower then most cars he saw! Let alone and old crappy ford.

If it were my car I'd drive it hard the whole way there. This may or maynot break loose carbon buildup in your cats, which will also help. By drive hard I mean higher Rpm then usuall. Don't race it, or drive dangerous. Just trying to get *** much pressure buildup in the exhaust to knock some of that **** out of there.

( been building cars for 10 years daily. You'd be suprised what little things will do to help) goodluck to you.

Battery was out of 99 ford taurus for 2 month now cant get reading from obd told to drive car 4/5 days how many mile do i need to dive car to reset obd for emission test

It has nothing to do with Miles and EVERYTHING to do with Drive Cycles.. There are certain things that must be tested. Within the first 10 miles, generally speaking you are going to complete the Drive Cycle requirements for ALL the tests except for 2-3. The EVAP/ O2 normally the last ones to get cleared.

Your Vehicle is a 1999 which means that you can pass the I/M test with 2 lights "NOT READY". The EVAP is going to take longer than a few miles, you must fill up your car with fuel above the 3/4 mark and then it has to go below I believe it is 1/2.

But if there are 2 Not Ready's... it will pass

Hi my check engine light is on and it wont pass inspection, gave it a tune up. I was told at the time i was tryin to get an inspection that the timimg belt was bad, took it for second opinion and i was...

hi what part of the inspections? emissions? normally if you have the engine light on and you have high emissions, this is normally due to a bad o2 sensor, but that's just a guess, you will be better off getting the code read on a diagnostic's machine to find out what the error is, the belt can and can not have things to do with it, if the timing was out that would have an effect but if the vehicle is running ok then i very much doubt that will be anything to do with it but like i said if timing is out it will...hope this helps

I have had the timing belt and kit replaced on my car along with a sensor and my check engine light will not go off so that i can pass the required emissions test for my state

you need to access the trouble code to better define the problem. insert key into ignition. you will need to turn the key to the position just before the engine cranks; the dash lights will be on. now turn the key back one click. You need to do this a total of 3 times ending in the on position( dash lights on-not cranking). Your trouble code will either show on the odometer( if it's digital) or will blink on the check engine light. count the number of blinks-pause-blinks etc. jot the numbers down. You can google the numbers to see what system is at fault.

Starting for 1999 Saturn SC

I had a similar problem. My 99 Saturn SL1 would crank and crank but would not start. I'd step on the gas repeatedly when it seemed like it was about to start. I got a new battery, alternator, complete tune up and nothing helped. As an aside, my flunked the emissions test and I had to go to a shop and have it hooked up to a computer for diagnosis. They found many things wrong and I ended up changing the oxygen sensor and the catalitic converter because the mechanic said that these were the most important things to fix so that the car could pass the emissions test. My car passed the emissions test Also I no longer had problems with starting the car. Replace your oxygen sensor.
