I do not know what 2l and 4l are???????
There are three driving modes: 2H, 4H and 4L, which stands for 4x2 High, 4x4 High and 4x4 Low. There is a modification that can be made on the transfer case to add a 2L (4x2 Low) mode, but that's not original.
In order to use any of the 4x4 modes you will also have to step out of the car and turn the free wheeling hubs to the "lock" or "4x4" position.

It is suppose to do that. When there is a power drain on the electrical system the "idle up" vacuum switch kicks on to up the idle speed to spin the alternator faster.

As this model doesn't have a centre differential, you CANNOT use 4WD on hard surfaces. You will experience transmission "wind-up" which on a good day will make it difficult to select 2WD again, and on a bad day will break something in the driveline.
