SOURCE: Change Fuel Pump on 1999 Chev Silverado v8 2 wd automatic 2 door

well the pump is in the fuel tank and it depends if the tank is full or not if it is its very heavy and you will need a jack and 1 other person to help you there are two fuel lines to unhook and the electrical connector. When replacing it replace the entire fuel pump/sending unit and the electrical harness or you will end up having more problems also spend the extra 15$ and replace the fuel filter

SOURCE: Hesitation problem

try cleaning the inside of the MAF sensor and do the following procedure as well.
Here is the most common cause of surges and stalls at stops and low erratic idle speed and rough idle, it is in most cases the idle speed control air-bypass valve and or throttle valve and upper intake, these area's get full of gunk and combustion residue over the miles and cause idle issues (stalls, low idle) like yours, Get a can of intake cleaner from any local parts store, not carb spray, intake cleaner, it is made by a company called CRC, remove the air intake hose to the engine, hold the idle high so the engine won't stall, then spray the can of cleaner into the intake while keeping the engine running, use at least 1/2 the can, shut down the engine and disconnect the battery for 5 minutes, then restart and complete a number of mixed driving cycles, town, freeway, stop and go etc., after a few days the problem will go away as the system will relearn to the clean intake.

My 2000 silverado stalls and sputters and pops when theres less than half a tank of gas

Have your pickup unit inside fuel tank checked. Sometimes the rubber lines that connects the fuel pump to pickup tube deteriorates. When fuel level gets below the connection, the system will draw air in and the sputtering will occur. Also check the charcoal cannister and return lines for clogging.

you need to have the fuel pressure at the fuel rail checked. Sounds like a bad fuel pump.

How do I change the fuel pump

No pressure at fuel rail or nothing coming from injectors? I have seen pumps fail like that though. Pump comes out like the older pickup/sending units did. after tank is down, remove snap ring then remove pump. Check the "sock" filter on the pump to make sure it's nopt plugged up...If it is, you can change sock and clean out tank. Otherwise replace pump.
