I have to turn on the air conditioner to defrost my front window during the winter time. If I turn on the heater to defrost it gets worse. How do I fix this?

To understand how a/c works will explain what is happening. A/c works by moving the haet from inside to outside. at the evaporator which is inside the car this action freezes the coils and the hot air of the inside condenses on the coils and water is drained outside. When there is no more water left in the air in side the car the windscreen goes clear. When you use the heater the water in the air in the car will still form as fog on the inside until the air temp dries it out. In short it is more efficient to use the a/c for short spells to clear the screen than the heater demister

SOURCE: air conditioner staying on...

Many cars use air conditioning as part of the defrost function. Cold air will clear windshield faster than hot air.

SOURCE: Front Defrost

clean the pollen filter wherever it is some are under the dash in the ac unit and some are below the grill vents where the wipers are.if this doesnt work then it could be a trampilla playing up thats controling the air in and recirculate .but if tis this then just disconnect the vacumn pipe and stick something in like a stic to hold the flap open .works on a vauxhaul zaffiro and a citreon zx

If your car has an air conditioner turn it on as well as the heater . Air conditioned air is very dry and usually defrosts the windscreen quickly. The heat from the heater will overcome the cold air from the air/con. It is good for the air/con to be run during the winter months as well as summer, it stops the seals drying out and leaking refrigerent.

I turn on the defrost and the windows fog up and the car smeels like antifreeze. Also feels like not enough air coming out defrost vents; most air coming out dash vents. It has been using a little water...

Hey Tbs,
You are correct in assuming it will get worse.. if you are leaking antifreeze, it wil not fix itself (DO NOT put any kind of "radiator stop leak" in it) .... take it to a qualified professional and tell them whast happening and let them repair it!! (a radiator shop - NOT the dealer)..

I get noise from the pulling system when i turn the heater on

hi,

you may get some noise from the pullies to some degree, when you switch your heater and/or defroster on the heater fan draws major amps and the defroster secretly turns the air conditioner on to defog the windows, so thats two major things drawing off the pullies. have you had your serpentine belt serviced ever? it may be time for a new serpentine belt? It could also mean your serpentine idler pully bearings may be getting ready to go, the alternator may be getting ready to buy acreage also. watch your gauges closely when your driving. your car is getting ready to have one of these accessories go out, dont take it on long trips and take it to your mechanic if it gets any worse. clean your battery posts in the meantime also..

AC/Defroster issue

On most vehicles the AC comes on when the defrost is on to keep AC compressor/clutch from seizing up from non use during winter months.

I have a 1996 eldorado, after changing oil at jlube i started the car and noticed ac on and temperature set as hot as possible,i took off and immediately smoke came out of vents and now theres no air...

there is nothing that is going to break by having the AC on and then turning up the temperature all the way except a little worse fuel mileage. Keep in mind that your AC comes on during the defrost mode to help dry the air inside your car so your windows dont fog up. If there is no air movement then it sounds like the blower fan decided it was time to quit. It just happened now instead of the middle of winter or the day you needed the defroster--(defogger)

Windows fogg up even with the defrost on

It could be you pollen filter that needs replacing, but check first that you haven't got your heater control on recurculation.

Everytime I turn on the front defrost, the air condition goes on, how can I turn it off. Please note, the air condition button/light is already off on the front dash board.

This is normal....everything is working fine...if the window is being defrosted.

The defrost on a car works by using the A/C to remove the moisture from the air (thereby lowering the relative humidity)
It also lubricates the seal within the A/C unit during the winter...reducing the chance of seizure/failure during the following summer due to lack of lubrication.
