1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo stalls when put into drive, even after warming up.

I warm it up, put it in reverse... It's fine.... I put it into drive, it dies immediately. Change to neutral, it starts right back up. Into drive again, it stalls. Starts right back up. After doing it a few times, it will be fine for the rest of the day. Then we go through the same routine the next day.... I am guessing this may be a sensor, but I would like some input....

I see a number of answers BUT the reason this is happening is the transmission solenoid pack is faulty. Check the wiring, check the plug at the transmission. If all appears to be okay then unplug the transmission electrical connector and see if it still behaves in the same way. If it is different, then it is your solenoids inside your transmission. They are located above the shift plate and can be replaced if the condition of the vehicle and the mileage is such that it is worth replacing.

First before anything as you are told by Kardoc, I am sure your throttle body does not have idle load values, this happens due to carbon cradges build up and filling the set idle gap closed so have the unit cleaned. If it continues get someone with a diagnostic machine have him clear all the stored fault in the TCU, then remove battery for 18 minutes, then put back batteries and retest

Could be a dirty intake manifold and IAC valve. Spray some intake cleaner into the throttle body with the engine running to clean the system.

SOURCE: 95 cherokee sport stalling

Since the car stall only in the drive position, it sounds(i'm not there to actually ck the car)like when the engine torques, it might be pulling on a harness somewhere and killing the ignition. Do this, start the car and under the hood while the engine is running, move or jiggle the harnesses around and see if the car stalls. If the car stalls try to pinpoint the location on the harness and look for frayed or broken wires.

SOURCE: 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee stalls immediately after

check intake manifold air temp sensor and engine coolant sensor...one may be out of range but not enough to turn on dash light. tests and specs can be found in chiltons or haynes, test is done with digital multi-meter.

When you step on the gas pedal the engine commands are to give more fuel,so obvoiusly you have a fuel pressure problem, from a neede fuel filter or even a new pump or both

Have you scanned the system for fualt codes? An O2 sensor will never cause the engine to stall out like this, NEVER.

1999 Jeep grand cherokee limited - irregular idle

I don 't know if I can solve it, but I had a very similar problem on a 2002 Grd Cherokee Laredo. It ended up being the Throttle Positioning Sensor (TPS). Unfortunately the part alone is about $125 and and total installed cost was about $250. It would idle high at first, then gradually work it self down to a normal idle. Once it was warmed up it it would have an up and down RPM during idling, and several times it stalled out at intersections. There was also a lot of transmission clunking going on when you put it in reverse or drive.
Runs like a dream now. Clunking is gone and idle speed is just right.
