I have a 2005 Suzuki XL7 and starting in fall 2008 noticed smoke at start up,briefly in begining,getting longer duration and more quanity of smoke closer to December.Was using oil at an increasing rate till it was needing two-three quarts every 10-15 days and smoke was noticable even being driven.Took it to dealer,told em bout smoke and oil usage.Their diagnosis:EGR valve stuck open. They cleaned egr of gunk so it would close/operate properly,had oil change,reset computer to remove engine light.Recomended new EGR,spark plug tune up,air clean system tune up.Told me to drive it for couple weeks/1000 miles or so and see if helps with smoke/oil burning.I did question this as I didn't think oil could be being burned like this without it being internal from blowing by valves or piston rings,ect..and that would be under 7yr./100k drivetrain warranty and said so. They said this was the solution so I paid for the Diagnos. and left,no ser.eng.light on,seemed better.Until next day,light returned along with smoke and oil use continued.
Couple weeks go by as I had to make the money to pay for parts/labor since it wasn't drivetrain warranty when last saturday after about a 25 mile drive to collect some checks car starts straining like it is under heavey load and takes alot of accelerator pedal to get it to accelerate/downshift transmision to accel./bad vibration at idle/very rough idle/hard start,ect.Called dealer and ordered EGR/made appointment for service/Only driven to get to dealer for before mentioned repairs(Egr valve,tune up,air system,and factory corrosion check recall)Total parts & labor:$839.41. Result: No change to performance/Idle?start up/ nothing.Was then told by the tech working on car"You know you got a mis-firing #5 cylinder" like I should have had that on work order in the first place& needed another $100 for diagnostic on that cylinder, almost like I had said to them in the begining.I put that off for a day or two now cause I wanted some other input so I won't be taken to the cleaners by trying to put something else as problem and not warranty.He already started to say "probably internall but diagnos. needed to confirm not coil"when I cut him off and said we tried their recomendations and I didn't have any more money to play trial&error when it had been internal to start with.The service manager then stepped in front of him and said it would be drivetrain warranty for repairs inside cylinder,mostly cause I was yelling at the other guy by this time.
Am I unreasonable to expect the warranty to be applied here especially after following what they instucted to be done & being out over $1000 just to them,not including gas expenses, when Their solutions weren't even the correct ones to bgin with?Any input is extremely appreciated! Ronnie
No Ronnie, You are Absolutely Correct. If they will Initiate the Warranty after Being Yelled at, They should have been using it for the Repairs the Entire time. The Thing is, They actually WERE Using the Warranty for your Repair. They were sending the Old parts in for Warranty Verification and Pocketing your Cash. This has been done for MANY Years. The Dealerships Get Prorated Refunds from the Factory on the Warranty Items that they Replace and have to wait on this Cash. I have Been a Mechanic (ASE Certified) for 35 Years and have seen this Practice Performed Before. YOU Make them fix this Vehicle for you and DO NOT take NO for an Answer! Be a Pain in the **** and they will get tired of you and get it done for the Warranty. You are TOTALLY in the Right on this Issue! Let them Have It Bro!
I suggest you speak to the service manager (print this out as a reference). ask that the area rep for Suzuki be involved. also read over what is supposed to be covered by the warrenty. (don't take their word for it). then read up on the lemon laws regarding vehicles.... also use www.google.com to research any secret warrenties/repairs that should have been done for free... the dealer won't tell you about them if they can make money.
do research on the issue then have the area rep involved... and work your way up the food chain till you get some results.

Just an update for ya'll. They are fixin it under warranty finally. The problem ended up being a valve broke apart in # 5 cylinder.They are rebuilding it if machine shop can do work needed or a new block.Got the Rep. involved as you suggested and things got done.Service guys did try putting it like there were two different issues so I said that may well be but I brought it in for the smoking/oil consumption every time and did what you guys said (even questioned if they were sure they had right diagnosis) so if it was not diagnosed correctly it was on them.Had all paperwork that verified this and they couldn't argue anymore!Just thought you all might like an update and thanks again to
