I took cover off, and noticed that timing belt had jumped 1T. I did this several times. I cannot keep it on it's mark. The book says idler pulley should be at 4 o'clock, but I do not have a mark on back plate
Red block engines before 1993 are non interface engines so no damage to the valves 4 cylinder engines 6 cylinder are interface engines .you must change the tension-er and get the correct belt .set the timing marks ,for your camshaft sprocket, and the timing marks for the intermediate shaft sprocket, and the timing marks for the crankshaft sprocket. now with the nail in the spring for your tension er fit your correct belt.your belt should have three marks on it .the double line is for your crankshaft line it up with the timing mark. a singe line should then line up with the timing mark for your camshaft. the next line will line up with the timing mark for your intermediate shaft.when they are all lined up .pull out the nail holding the spring for your tension-er then turn the crankshaft by putting the bolt in turn by hand .three complete turns to check everything is ok then refit everything.
Re install timing belt and tighten tensioner one more notch . Make sure the dots match the markings this time .
If the belt keeps jumping, I would say you have a badly worn sprocket or the belt tensioner needs checking, it may need a new tensioner or your procedure for tightening it needs to be checked.
If no mark for the idler, then just put it at the 4 o'clock position, as you are facing it.

two things to check,,, there is a crank sensor at the back of the engineby the bulkhead,,at the top of the engine where the gearbox joins ,,,the sensors are known to be faulty if sometimes ,,, check the cable to the sensor,,if it is damaged replace the sensor,,,the other common problem is the fuel pump relay,,, behind the fusebox in the dash

Not sure if it is possible to have it run smoothly by being off a tooth.
The hash marks on the cam pulleys line up with the timing belt cover that goes over those pulleys. Should be two notches in the cover.
As for the lower marks...those aren't really visible till the lower aux. belt pulley is removed. Then you'll have a clear view of the line up marks. One on the inside and one on the outter area of the pulley itself.
When you put the t-belt on...it is a good idea to replace the tensioner as well.
Also when you have the new belt on...adjust the tensioner so that the handle looking thing is centered between the two notches that hold the tensioner in place to the block.
After putting all that together, its a good idea to rotate the timing belt two to four rotations till the marks all line up again. That will let you know if you are hitting the valves or not.

take out number one sparkplug, take the cam cover off. turn the engine of with a spanner on the bottom pulley. make sure number one piston is at TDC, now check to see if the inlet&outlet valves are close. and the piston is all the way at the top, do this with a long screwdriver to make sure it is.
if everything ok, then it will be a ignition problem.
