if a drive belt breaks, the debris can interfere with other engine components and do additional damage. rule of thumb belt life is 6yrs or 60000 miles. the belts operate critical engine systems ( alt, water pump, power steering pump) not something to short cut on. belts are noisey when cold due to additional load from battery use when starting or cold fuuids. have belts and tensioners checked for wear and correct operation
tell me type noise power steering if you hear whine or growl noise check fluid level,if fluid level okay look for a bent line or restricted pressure line, if fluid low find leak fix and add correct fluid level and bleed power steering system.
You may want to stop driving it, open the hood, and check to make sure your belts are still attached. The smell might be that your very low on power steering fluid, which would also make it extremely hard to steer.
power steering pumps can be noisey for years without actually failing but in saying that, the longer you let the pump whine the more metal will be going into your rack causeing premature rack replacing. if the level is ok and it whines then the pumps on its way out
No most likely the power steering needs a new belt, when they loosen off or start to decay they squel lodly, ofetn they can be tightened up but for the cost involved just buy a new one. if the steering still feels like it is working correctly but just noisey then most likely it is fine and it will just be the belt.
on a car this year the power steering rack and pump should last another few years yet.
Hope this helps, p.s a garage will not charge much to fix this. Regards
