I have a 2005 lincoln aviator. The engine light came on and it idles rough when stopped what could cause this?

The following are the general instructions on the start of diagnosing any electronically controlled engine or transmission problem.

The engine and the automatic transmission (transmission control is only for automatics, engine is still computer controlled no matter the transmission type) in this vehicle are computer controlled and in most cases when a fault occurs a fault code is stored in the memory of the computer control module. There are exceptions to this, such as the Mass Airflow Meter and fuel pressure problems. What must be done is to have all the basic testing done such as a scan of the system for fault codes as well as a check with a live data scanner tool for engine functions that are not within range of normal, a trained technician is required to know what is correct and what isn't, then based on careful diagnostics done from a factory repair manual the correct part is replaced or the wiring repaired or the computer replaced (known as the PCM or ECM,ECU), which is very rarely the problem. Other basic checks must be done as well such as mechanical problems with the engine as well as engine state of tune and mileage on the engine. The transmission can have mechanical issues as well such as no gear engagement at all or a failed pump or other pressure related problems. Also engine mechanical problems can and do cause many drive-ability related problem such as rough idle and other symptoms.

D0108 fault code

I will assume this is a "P" code.

P0108 FORD - Manifold Absolute Pressure/Barometric Pressure Sensor High Inputxicon.jpghttp://engine-codes.com/p0108_ford.htmlForum CodePossible causes- Manifold Absolute Pressure harness is open or shorted
- Manifold Absolute Pressure sensor poor electrical circuit connector
- Faulty Manifold Absolute Pressure sensor
- Faulty Engine Control Module (ECM) When is the code detected? The Engine Control Module (ECM) has detected a performance fault with the anifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) sensorSymptoms- Engine Light ON (or Service Engine Soon Warning Light)
- Engine rough idle
- Engine hesitation

2005 lincoln aviator. motor runs rough at idle

Had the same problem but i also had loss of power when driving. Listen for a high pitch whine in the engine compartment. If so then it's a vacuum line leak. Mine was under the plastic cover they have on top of the engine, rear of the engine near the firewall. Just check those rubber hoses and see if one of them developed a hole. If so just replace it and you should be good to go.

Have 2005 lincoln aviator - has miss at 30-55 MPH - no codes replaced all coils ( ford) & spark plugs (twice) - repair vacuum leak at PCV Still misses -- no codes -- help

The COPS (coils) may have shorted the drivers in the PCM (computer). You should get a misfire code for each cylinder misfiring though.

Slim possibility, but very expensive unless you have a service contract.
LINCOLN: 1999-2004 Navigator
2002-2003 Blackwood
2003-2005 Aviator MERCURY: 2003-2004 Marauder
ISSUE: Some 1999-2004 Navigator, 2002-2003 Blackwood, 2003-2005 Aviator, 2003-2004 Marauder and 2003-2004 Mustang vehicles built before 12/19/2004 equipped with 4.6L 4V/5.4 4V engine may exhibit a runs rough, lacks power, and engine misfire, prompted by a MIL light and DTC codes P0301, P0302, P0303, P0304, P0305, P0306, P0307, P0308, and P0316.
ACTION: Diagnose engine for engine misfire concern. If diagnostics determine an engine misfire which is characterized by leakage through exhaust valve(s), only replace the affected cylinder head(s).
SERVICE PROCEDURE FOR VEHICLES WITH RUNS ROUGH/MISFIRE CONDITION:
  1. Perform relative compression check on all cylinders. If abnormal, check cylinder leakage and actual compression for "low" cylinders refer to Workshop Manual (WSM), Section 303-00.
  2. If leakage/compression check indicates a valve train concern, per valve train diagnostics in WSM, Section 303-00, replace cylinder head and cam assembly, pipe plugs and timing chain tensioner, per procedure outlined in WSM, Section 303-01.
  3. If cylinder leakage and compression tests are inconclusive, perform misfire diagnostic, per TSB 05-22-8. NOTE: DO NOT TRANSFER SPARK PLUGS. INSTALL NEW SPARK PLUGS IN REPLACEMENT CYLINDER HEAD AND CAM ASSEMBLY. NOTE: THE ENGINE MISFIRE CONCERN IS TYPICALLY EXHIBITED ON THE LEFT HAND CYLINDER HEAD AND RARELY ON THE RIGHT HAND CYLINDER HEAD. UNLESS CONFIRMED, THE RIGHT HAND CYLINDER HEAD SHOULD NOT BE REPLACED AS AN "EXTRA MEASURE" SERVICE PRECAUTION. NOTE: THE REPLACEMENT CYLINDER HEAD WILL NOT IMPROVE OR REDUCE ENGINE HORSEPOWER OR TORQUE ABOVE ADVERTISED LEVELS.

Rough idle on 2003 lincoln aviator

Hi! As a first course of action please check the sparkplugs. If the plugs are full of carbon this can cause a rough idle on the car. You will need to clean or replace the plugs if necessary. Hope this helps and thank you for using FixYa!

the Aviator transmissions are "SEALED" units and have NO dipstick.
If light comes on better go to Lee Myles or wherever but Lincoln will rake you over the coals.

Putter-shaking-hesitating-light on- slow acceleration-rough ride-check engine/emissions light on-

You can take it to Autozone or O'reillys and they will scan the engine for free. They usually will identify the part that is bad from reading the scanner.
It sounds like the EGR sensor for the emissions and a TPS throttle position sensor for the performance. The rough ride could be a 4x4 control because some of the Lincolns will pump up the air suspension harder for the 4x4 setting.

Rough idle and engine light is on my 2003 aviator 4.6 engine

If there is an Auto Zone around your area, have the truck scanned for the DTC codes which is causing your idle problem. There are to many things that can cause your trucks idle to be rough. Once you have it scanned, we can address the issue and have your truck running 100% again. Auto Zone scan free of charge and can give you the step by step instructions to repairing and replacing the parts needed. Good luck and keep me posted, be glad to help.
