Shifter problems with an '01 Acura MDX

Hi Dennis, we have an '01 Acura MDX that just had its tranny rebuilt Nov 2012 (rebuilt torque converter w/new 3rd gear sensor) @ a large transmission shop. After getting it back, the shifter seemed a little sticky & got worse over the following 2 month period. Took it back in, they disconnected cable & said shifter was still sticky & believed it to be in need of a new shifter console as the old one was very dirty & gunked up w/spills, etc. They ordered the part from Acura & it seems to have fixed the shifting problem, but now the "P" will not light up in dash when put in park. The tech can make it light up by adjusting the cable but at the cost of D1 & 2 not engaging. They are thinking it is the shift interlock solenoid that is defective in the new part and will be trying that Monday morning. Do you have any suggestions?

SOURCE: Gear shifting problem

The 1st thing to do is have a test run on the transmission control module to see if any trouble codes are present, next have you ever serviced the transmission, fluid and filter change, should be done at 60,000 miles, on occasion this can cure problems like yours.

I doubt they did anymore damage but i`ll bet that the engine was damaged from the training going out such as valve guides and seals and carbon build up on plugs ETC.

First service tranny ( change fluid and replace filter) go to autozone for your parts.

Have the park/ neutral safety switch checked. this is most likely your problem.

My husband said that the VTM-4 light is on in his 2001 Acura MDX. We were on our way to the transmission shop because the transmission is being rebuilt. What causes this light to come on?

the VTM-4 relates to torque management for the 4 wheel drive / all wheel drive part of the transmission. I have had people tell me more than once that that VTM-4 issue went away after having the cylinder head valves adjusted.
A little google search may back this up.

2002 acura mdx will not start

check that the safety switch on the tranny is still connected . It is the switch that stops anything working until the tranny is in neutral or park That is the area I would be looking at first

My 2001 Acura MDX automatically disengage to neutra from gear four.I have service the gear, change the gear sensor and the fibers, still the problem persist.what is the way out?ensor

Hi,
Acura and Honda have a KNOWN Issue w/the Torque Converter in the Automatic Transmission. Very likely you'll need to have it rebuilt....may be cheaper to trade it in on a newer car.

Search for 'Acura automatic transmission issues' online.

Howling noise from the transmission

You will need to pull it ,and have it rebuilt. Need to be careful, because they usually don't touch the diff,on a trans axle rebuilt

I would get a reman from the dealer and have a shop R&R yours, then return the core.

How much should it cost to replace the torque converter on a 2005 mdx?

I had mine replaced at the dealer for $2100.00. It was covered under the extended warranty. Ours was replaced because the torque converter wasn't unlocking when the RPMs were low. So we had pinging of the engine. It was cured with the torque converter. Ours is a 2005 and it was last summer it was done.

2003 Acura MDX, makes noise and vibration while driving.

If it happens with light accelleration then there's a good chance it's your torque converter. This is one of the few weak points with MDX
