1998 subaru legacy 2.2 engine problems

CEL light is always on and flashes intermitently when engine is under load. Error code says it's a bad vehicle speed sensor. Speedometer acts funny sometimes and I wonder if that could also be related to the speed sensor problem. Any advice? Thanks.

Yes.
The speed sensor in the transmission gives the computer data to control fuel mixture and timing, and it also drives the speedo and odometer.
The sensor would need to be tested.

SOURCE: How do you reset engine check light on 2004 Subaru Outback?

u can clear/reset the check engine light either with a scan tool, hit clear codes, or u can just disconnect the battery, the scanner clearing method is preferred as disconnecting the battery can cause temporary stalling issues.

SOURCE: what does error code 55 mean for Subaru leagcy 2005

This is a communication error with the BIU (body integrated unit). Need to take to the dealer, possible that the ECU needs to be replaced to fix this issue. It should be covered under the federal emmission wrty.

SOURCE: 1995 Subaru Legacy. Speedometer stopped working

It's probably your speedo head, the gauge itself. I put several used ones in our car to no avail. When I finally went to the dealer they needed to know my cars serial numbers then sold me a gauge that matched my car. Sounds goofy but it worked! I didled with this problem for over a year on and off before that.

1992 legacy stumbles under all conditions.no codes showing

George could be a plugged catalytic, it would be good to get it scanned because if engine light has flashed, there may be stored codes, which may give better diagnosing.

My car won't start, immediately after replacing a headlight bulb.

The knock sensor and o2 sensor readouts are from wrong or no detonation and the UN burned fuel leaving exhaust , not faulty sensors , sounds like a compression problem but could be many things

1990 Subary Legacy engine miss at idle

If you are getting a CEL (Check Engine Light) then figure out the code. This is an OBD-I engine so you need to connect the appropriate test connector and count the blinking lights. (Google Subaru OBD-1 codes).
Now as for your problem. Most common cause is the MAF (mass air flow sensor). The square box on the air intake. Try tapping it with a screw driver, the connect inside is joined only with solder and years of stress can crack the solder joint. If your engine stalls whenever you tap it, get a new one or rip off the cover and resolder the connect. Also check the IAC (Idle Air Control solenoid).

Check engine light is on intermitently on my 1998 legacy estate

The only way to fix the check engine light is to have the codes read by hand-held obd1 scanner. THis will tell you exactly what the problem is. It may just be a vacuum leak. Never really know without having codes read. Many part stores do this for free.
