I just walked out and tried to start the car. It wouldn't start the first time, the second it started up but sounded rought. Then the check engine light came on but it has done that since the insrument cluster started going bad. Then it started flashing. I put the car in reverse and that's when it started to sound bad. I thought maybe it was the cold so I drove it down the street and it didn't seem to want to shift into second gear. I stopped at a gas station and turned the car off. When I got out it smelled like burning plastic or rubber. Any suggestions?

These are common for stripping the splines in the torque converter for the pump shaft. If it did this when you check the fluid with the engine running it will read overfull. To fix it you would have to remove the transmission and replace the torque converter.
Sounds pretty serious to me. It is impossible to say without inspecting the vehicle...maybe a broken CV joint or something similar.
