Transmission problems on 1995 Ford Windstar 3.8 liter engine when motor is cold transmission shifts fine, when it gets hot it will not shift into overdrive.Changed transmission filter and fluid believe it may be celinoid crank senser, tryed to replace and cannot find where it is.Is there an easy way to access this part?

I have the same problem. But I took mine in to get my tranny rebuilt and spent lots of money. I had to take it back two times cause my tranny continued to do the same thing. But my idiot light for the tranny on my overdrive gear shift does not come on, it just sticks in gear but will eventually go. My warranty is out for the tranny, now I am ready to drive it off a cliff!!

my 95 windstar starts slipping under load when accending minor grades if the trans is cold. i solve this by shifting into 2nd. other than this, this ride is a great camping machine for the family. very realiable.

Sounds like we are in about the same boat with our Windstar Vans..Mine is a 1995 and I have been having some shift issues as well. I ran a code check and it came up with P0750 which is a shift solenoid. Had to remove the side pan on the end of the transmission..(Drivers Side). There are three solenoids in a row on the right side of the trans.. Has three plugs to them. Got them for $22.00 each. Changed them and the same code came up. After some research I found out that the EPC solenoid may be the issue. It controls the ****** pressure which effects the shifting of the ******...I found it on the net for #27.00...I am going to replace that and that will be about it as far as me trying to work out the bugs...I have also replaced the Neutral switch and the three shift solenoids so far...My trans. will shift up to O/D and then at 45 mph. drop back down into 2nd. it causes the engine to rev up...Have to slow down to get it to shift up again...Will post more later...

Also I have to run about 43 mph on the hwy or it drops back into 2nd. The EPC solenoid is located in the upper left corner of the end pan...Small bolts remove it and a plug on some models and other its a regulated pressure switch which is a constant...

What system trouble codes do u have? the most common cause of this is either the vehicle speed sensor (VSS) or the OD control solenoid inside the trans pan.

1995 ford Windstar won't shift from 2 gear

The fact that her Windstar won't shift out of second would indicate one The first would be that the 2/3 shift solenoid has failed on her. This could conceivably cause this failure to move above that shift point. It's possible that it has only reached a state of failure in which it locks up at normal operating temperature. Therefore, when the engine is cold and stays cold (because of the short trip distance), it manages to operate.

The second possibility is a problem with the control module. This computer helps to tell the transmission when to shift. It's not uncommon for electronics in vehicles to show early signs of failure more when heated than cold so it could be that this module is malfunctioning with the engine warm causing her failure to shift.

Finally, the problem could be an internal transmission problem of another type (many possibilities) that could only be accurately identified by a hands on inspection.

I've seen this similar problem before on this era Windstar and repair has been replacing the control module twice, the shift solenoid on three occasions, and one required a complete transmission rebuild. of three things (given that the fluid is good).

Sometimes the transmission will not shift

Make sure fluid level is correct. Level ground, shift through the gears, back in park, check fluid. If ok, could be transmission range sensor located on top of the transmission, connected to the shift cable linkage. 60 bucks and a few bolts. Make sure its aligned right when installing.

Failed OBDII Diagnstic trouble codes P0761 and O1744 What does this mean?

code P0761-
Possible causes - Low transmission fluid level
- Dirty transmission fluid
- Faulty shift solenoid 3 valve
- Shift solenoid 3 valve harness or connectors
- Shift solenoid 3 valve circuit is open or shorted
P0761 FORD Description Shift solenoid valve 3 is turned ON or OFF by the Transmission Control Module (TCM) in response to signals sent from the park/neutral position (PNP) switch, vehicle speed and Engine Control Module (ECM) (throttle opening). Gears will then be shifted to the optimum position. When is the code detected? The P0761 code is detected when the ECM has detected a mechanical fault with the solenoid energized, valve stuck off code O1744- is not a code these are the ones I have found that come close

Will a transmission #ax4s from 1988 ford windstar fit a 200 windstar with transmission # ax4s

I dont think that will work ....1988 was aod and aode trans

The AXOD-E was renamed AX4S in 1993. In addition to the name change, improvements in the lubrication of the gearset and capacity upgrades were made. A centrifugal piston assembly was implemented in the intermediate clutch position to improve 1st-2nd and 2nd-1st shift quality and an increase in the clutch's durability was made on some models. High energy friction materials were also introduced. A new twin piston torque converter clutch (TCC) was introduced with the AX4S and the AX4N on some models. The transaxle pan on this model will sometimes read "AXOD Metric" since it's based on the AXOD transaxle. The data plate code for this transmission is "L."
Applications:
The Ford AX4S automatic transmission is a four-speed electronic overdrive transmission used in 1995 to 2000 Ford Windstar minivan. The transmission is also used in 1991 to 2003 Ford Taurus and Mercury Sable, and 1993 to 1995 Ford Taurus SHO models. The AX4S is a second-generation version of the AXOD and AXOD-E transmissions used in 1986 to 1991 Ford Taurus.

1995 Ford Windstar transmission is slipping and shifting hard

bad news, 1995 ford windstar transmissions fail extremely frequently at about 60000 miles, I would not waste money in a transmission flush as it will most likely not correct the problem. It is a dsign flaw, the transmission cannot handle the torque of the 3,8L engine and the 700Lbs of added weight of the windstar body.
I'd just use it untill it fails...
