The oil light in my 1985 Mazda 626 keeps coming on although there is plenty of oil in the engine. I checked and topped the oil up less than a week ago (before a road trip) and today the oil light came on. I checked the oil level and it was sitting on the full line on the dipstick. Are there any other reasons the oil light would come on and stay on?

The oil light will come on with low oil pressure (it is most likely a faulty / blocked sensor). This could be a simple sensor fault or blocked pick-up or a problem with your pump. I would get it checked out - if the oil pick-up needs to be replaced or cleaned the sump would need to be removed. A quick visual is to open where you top up the oil and see if you can see no oil at the top of your engine if there is very little or none then it is definitely the pick-up and don't drive the car as you will cause wear. If you start your engine you should see oil "sloshing" in the top end - again if there is none then there is no lubrication for the top end.

Thanks for that DJGough, Im smart enough to know when something has me beat, and it looks like this may be one of those times. I checked where I pour the oil and there wasnt a lot of movement, but there was some, so I added more oil just in case... now please tell me I cant damage the car by having too much oil in it!

You remind me of a funny story of someone I knew once filled their engine to the brim with oil once - funny enough the engine would not turn over. A small amount of overfill of oil will not cause major problems - the car will probably vent through the breather and burn off through the exhaust. So it is more an environmental issue (but the breather is there to release any excess pressure or minor overfills). So did the further top-up make the light go off?

unfortumately no, the light came back on after about five minutes of town driving. (top speed reached was around 50kph) Going to check the sensor first and then see what happens... provided I can *FIND* the sensor :)

... and then my brother showed me the right bit and I discovered where the sensor was. sure enough it needs replacing!

SOURCE: 2005 mazda 3 2.3l that is burning oil (no leaks)

possibly the pcv but check if your cars exhaust smoke is blueish or white in color if it does and your car doesnt have an oil leak then sure its burning engine oil along with fuel, the piston rings is defective, since you replaced engine oil the additive that the owner has put with the oil to prevent blowby is gone thats why it starts burning oil.....

Red light in dashbord blinks on/off look like a red hose with a drip.

That's the oil pressure light. Take it to an auto parts store like Napa or AutoZone, and ask the staff to scan your car (they'll do it for free). That will diagnose the specific problem. Odds are that you're a little low on oil.
