Check the way you have installed the bulb.if it is a combination stop/tail light.It really only goes in one way as the pins are offset, however it can be forced.also check the wiring plug as it may have a dry joint in the wiring
Sound like a ground fault, or the connector block is corroded, or unplugged , you should find this under the rear of the vehicle were both wiring harnesses meet. may just need to replace the block. Hopefully this helps you out.
