Looked everywhere but can't find where the distributor lines up to start. The Z24 was just rebuilt, have spark and fuel but just wont start
24Z nissan engine, it should have some colored links as in silver , one will match the cam mark wich is a three hole gear the pin on the cam will go through the number two hole on the gear and the colored link will set on the number two dot on the gear, then the second colored link will go on the crank gear dot. But if you are talking about a z24 with dohc yiu will have to stick a bolt back in the hole of the cam gears into the block to hold them in place while you set the crank gear and put the chain on it when you have it aligned, but if it does not start after several tries you may have warped the. Valves.
I'm showing the first Cavalier Z24 being sold in 1988 with a 2.8 engine.
I'm not sure what you mean by marks, normally you would like up the marks on the crank pulley and turn the distributor to the point where the rotor is pointing to the number one cylinder plug wire.
If the distributor has been out of the engine, you will be on or 180 degrees off.
Once you get the engine started, you would use a timing light to set base timing.
close on what I'm asking for. on the Z24 you have to remove the oil-pump, rotate the oil/distributor either right or left to line up the mark on it. my problem is that the Z24 has 8 spark plugs on a 4-cyl. lining it up is either to intake or ex or both to line it up for start. called dealer but no one is old enough to know how to set it back up.
oil/distributor shaft
I am so sorry - I missed the fact it is a Nissan and thought it was a Chevy Cavalier. My research found you set the engine on top dead center and install the distributor so that the rotor is pointing to the number one wire for the intake side. TDC means the position where the number one cylinder is up on the compression stroke and ready to fire the plug.
thx hope it works. one more question is the inner one 1 or the outer one the 1?
It would be number one intake which I think is on the opposite side of the distributor. The side with the intake manifold. The distributor cap is usually marked 1I and 1E.
ok I got that part it\'s backfiring from the cabs now. and I set them both to 1I and 1E after moving the dis to retard it it still backfired from the carbs. I don\'t know which one is the right coil for intake or ex. I\'ll try retarding it in the morning. if it don\'t rain. but thx for your help.
man I hate it when those who don\'t know about car talk a bleep the retard-out of posts.
OK anyone who is having this problem starting this motor follow below...1. remove valve cover. 2. turn crank 180 deg's to ex and in are both pointing down. 3. mark distribotor's 1i and 1e on dis. body. 4.remove oil pump and shaft. 5. rotate rotor to 1i and 1e to marks you made. 6. rotate oil pump with shaft 180 deg's and re-install. If done right it should be lined up perfect. if not rotate pump and shaft 1 or 2 teeth either way till it locks in place. replace cap and start.

SOURCE: How do u set distributor in time on 89 Nissan z24
If the sticker is still under the hood it has the answer on it.
I just did some work on an 87 Z24i,
Find the notch on the crank shaft pully and mark it with some bright paint.
Start and warm the engine so it is at operating temp.
Loosen the hold down bolt for the distributor (10mm)
Hook a timing light to the #1 intake side wire. (the cap also should have "I1" on it.)
hold the timing light so it shines on the pointed and the crank pully and turn the distributor until the marks are aligned where they should be. (the 87 California specs is 10 degrees).
Tighten the bolt and its set.
The distributor only has so much movement due to the slotted hole for the hold down bolt.
If it does not reach the timing specs it may be due to timing chain stretch. The cam gear has three holes in it to compensate for this. That is a little more work to do but if needed just come back to this and I can help you.
