It depends on many things.
Your skill level, your work area, and your tool assortment.
Also, if you are going to tear down the engine to pull the pistons out and replace the rings, you would normally have the cylinder head(s) redone and replace the rest of the engine parts. Otherwise called an engine overhaul.
Then the question becomes, how much is the truck worth ?
It could cost you several hundred dollars and a couple of weeks of your time to rebuild the engine, where a used engine could be had for a couple of hundred.
If you really are interested in tackling the job, buy a repair book or shop manual and read up on it.
SOURCE: my 92 ranger XLT hood will not close, 4 cyclinder,
In the front of the hood latch ( to the left and right of the unit) there are two mounting screws that actually hold the hood latch piece together. If those screws are loosened the latch can be moved left and right. Align the latch piece to the hood to make sure the hood catches. As long as the latch itself will work by pushing it down this works and it also helps with tight tension issue on the pull chord from inside of the cab.
SOURCE: 2008 ford ranger 5 speed manuel transmission, ford
Ford does not have a code number for the broken part, we are checking transmisson number to see when first manufactured. Further Mazda B-series trucks on 3000 use the same motor and transmission, will be checking there info. It seems at this moment this part has not been produced, a part was sent up from Ford , but with think it is automatic trany blocker ring, not manual. Apparently Ford has never replaced this part on a manual trany.. We have a picture of the inside of the tranmission and all the parts, but 4 have manufacture numbers are missing. This is very difficult. The truck is on warranty, so it is a Ford problem.
