Hi, I have a 94 F150 that has developed a sharp metallic knock or popping sound that is coming from the steering gear. The truck has power steering with 72k miles on the truck. The sound occurs when turning the steering wheel back and forth at slow speeds or when stopped and happens at no particular point in the travel. It is very loud. Loud enough to be heard outside the truck or inside the cab. I've flushed out the old fluid and replaced it with Havoline Type F fluid which had no effect. The mesh adjustment seems to have no effect on it. I've checked the gear mounting bolts and the rubber steering shaft coupler both of which were tight. The Pitman arm is tight also. Any ideas what could be wrong with the gear? Thanks, Russ Hunter 1994 ford explorer 4X4 knocks and pops when turning/sounds and feels like LF will come off (at speed I mean !!!) Any ideas more on this? THX
I would check the front axle joints the get dry and stick
This is a guess but the inner tie rod and tie rod end (you have one of each on each side of the truck), wear out and make a loud clunk, mostly when changing direction, but also on starting & stopping. ABout a $200 repair including a front end alignment.
Call at least 3 shops for an estimate including your Ford dealer.
