Hurst is the only brand that's worthwhile to upgrade to.

Are you racing on the track?

Spending $ on a lighter flywheel and torque converter will get more bang for the buck.

SOURCE: shifter knob wont pop out and can not remove key

the button on the shifter needs to be poped out in the park position for the key to come out. as far as the button not poping out it may be a linkage problem, only fix is to take the shifter apart until the problem is found.

SOURCE: how to remove my old shifter knob on my 1979

I have a 78 with an automatic. I had a hard time removing mine also. It unscrews, but it has been on there for over 30 years. Here is what I did:
Wrap it in duct tape. Make it thick so the teeth of a wrench will not scratch through the tape. Find a large set of channel lock pliers or a suitable wrench and unscrew it. (Counter clockwise)

Replace auto shift lever

You need to remove the shift handle first...key must be on...no need to start...pull shift lever down to low gear...look on the back side of the knob...you should see a u-shaped clip head...pry gently under the u-shape with a scredriver to begin removal...then use needle nose pliers to completely pull the clip out...after this is removed...you will be able to kift the shifter knob off...Don't know if you mean replace shift knob...(known for breaking) or actual metal shift lever...if you need the shifter arm, your best find would be at your local salvage yard...some will remove for you...some will let you find your model and remove yourself...To re-install put the shift knob back on the shift lever...to lock in place then re-insert the u-clip to lock in place...Many good mechanics are not familiar with removing these shift knobs...Hope this helps.

Having a hard time putting my car in gear. It has to warmm up in order to engage the button on the shifter to put the car in gear.

The shifter knob that houses the button may be worn out or the shifter mechanism may need to be lubricated. You can try spraying a little WD-40 around the shift button and into the shift knob using the straw provided with the spray can.
To lubricate the shifter, the shift knob will have to be removed and the shift plate removed to gain access to the shifter mechanism.
Good luck.

I'd like to replace the stock shifter knob (or

Usually there is a nut on the bottom of a shift knob that needs to be loosened, then the knob just screws off. Use a wrench, if it's hexagonal, if it's just round or there is no nut it may just screw off. It will be really tight though, be prepared to have to really crank on it to get it loose. The new one should just thread back on. You may need to install a nut on the bottom to adjust the rotation of any pattern or gear shift diagram on the new one.

Manual 2001 sentra I wanted to replace the shift knob

you may just need to put some more elbow grease in to it. Stock shifters have the tendency to really stick after a while. Be sure though to turn counter clockwise.

Gear shifter will not go into park

There is a plastic actuator stick under the shift knob. Remove the "horse shoe" clip from the shift knob and remove knob by pulling strait up. You can twist it right and left a very small amount to loosen the knob, but not much.
Once you have the shift knob removed you will see the plastic actuator stick. Push down on the stick and put shift lever in park. If that works, the shift knob or stick is worn out.
Let me know.

Removal of gear shift knob

There are two types of shift knobs. One that unscrews and one that the lower trim of the shift knob separates from the knob using a trim stick. After separating the lower trim from the knob pull upward to release the knob from the shift lever. If a new shifter assembly is being installed, unscrew the original shift knob or separate the lower trim from the knob and pull up to remove the knob from the shift lever. Screw the knob onto the new shifter assembly's lever no more than 14 turns or install the lower trim onto the shift lever then push the knob onto the shift lever and install the lower trim piece onto the shift knob.
