How to remove stock shift knob

if it is a automatic remove the button by pulling or prying up on it underneth the button
is a snap ring you will need snap ring pliers
spred the snap ring open and pull it up then the knob is free to pull up be sure to remove the counsle upper plate so the boot can come up with the knob

the button on the shifter needs to be poped out in the park position for the key to come out. as far as the button not poping out it may be a linkage problem, only fix is to take the shifter apart until the problem is found.

There is a set screw under the crome ring at the bottom of the shifter knob. use a small flat screw driver and pry down on the chrome ring and it should come down and the set screw is under the chrome ring

I have a 78 with an automatic. I had a hard time removing mine also. It unscrews, but it has been on there for over 30 years. Here is what I did:
Wrap it in duct tape. Make it thick so the teeth of a wrench will not scratch through the tape. Find a large set of channel lock pliers or a suitable wrench and unscrew it. (Counter clockwise)
