Enough force applied will pop it out. But you can't grab hold and yank-you might pull apart the cv joint. Shops can use a slide hammer with an attached fork that slips around the cv joint housing. Another method is using a large screwdriver or pry bar between the axle housing and the cv joint housing. Slip it between them and place tip of bar against the cv housing. Now give it a good stiff push with your hand to pop out the joint and axle. Be careful of the aluminum axle case and the axle seal-don't break or damage anything. Just remember: enough force applied will pop out the circlip from its groove inside the axle case.

SOURCE: Brake drum 2005 Escape

here is a diagram on how to remove your brake drum. please do not forget to rate and comment about your experience with fixya today.

Removal & Installation
CAUTION Dust and dirt accumulating on brake parts during normal use may contain asbestos fibers from production or aftermarket brake linings. Breathing excessive concentrations of asbestos fibers can cause serious bodily harm. Exercise care when servicing brake parts. Do not sand or grind brake lining unless equipment used is designed to contain the dust residue. Do not clean brake parts with compressed air or by dry brushing. Cleaning should be done by dampening the brake components with a fine mist of water, then wiping the brake components clean with a dampened cloth. Dispose of cloth and all residue containing asbestos fibers in an impermeable container with the appropriate label. Follow practices prescribed by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for the handling, processing, and disposing of dust or debris that may contain asbestos fibers.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2. Remove the tire and wheel assembly.

CAUTION Use of a brake drum puller or a torch is not recommended. Brake drum distortion can result.

NOTE If the brake drum is rusted to the axle shaft pilot diameter, tap the center of the brake drum between the wheel studs.
  3. Remove the brake drum.
  4. If equipped, remove the brake drum retaining clips.
  5. If the brake drums will not come off, follow these steps.
  6. Move the brake shoe adjusting lever off the brake adjuster screw.
  7. Loosen the brake shoe adjuster screw nut by adjusting the nut upward.
  8. Using the special tool, 134-R0191, measure the brake drum inside diameter.
  9. Install a new brake drum if the maximum inside diameter exceeds the specification shown on the outside of the brake drum.

To install:

WARNING Whenever a wheel is installed, always remove any corrosion, dirt or foreign material present on the mounting surfaces of the wheel or the surface of the wheel hub, brake drum or brake disc that contacts the wheel. Installing wheels without correct metal-to-metal contact at the wheel mounting surfaces can cause the wheel nuts to loosen and the wheel to come off while the vehicle is in motion, causing loss of control. Failure to follow these instructions may result in personal injury.

  1. Clean the wheel hub mounting surface and wheel pilot.
  2. Install the tire and wheel assembly.

ABS Light stays ON.

You have a cracked tone ring at the end of one of the CV shafts, you'll need to remove the CV shafts and replace the tone rings, Ford sells them separately as this was a very common problem.

How to remove the front left axel shaft on a 1993 buick park ave.

Basically, jack up the vehicle and support it on jack stands, remove the nut on the end of the axle, outer tie rod end and ball joint. Split the tie rod end and ball joint from the spindle assembly. Gently tap the end of the axle to loosen from the wheel bearing assembly. Once loose pull the spindle assembly outward while pushing in on the end of the axle. Once the axle is free from the spindle housing. Will need to apply gentle pressure on each side on the inside CV joint to get the axle to release from the transmission. There is usually a "C" snap clip on the end of the axle in the transmission which may make it a little stubborn to get out. Be sure to not damage the seal where the axle goes into the transmission or you will have a leak

99 ford ranger cv axle popping out

I get the impression the cv joint has broken up. Jack up the side that's noisy and check hub for wheel bearing movement and then remove the boot clip and peek inside. I don't think it sounds very happy. It may be simpler and cheaper to get a whole shaft if the current one is badly damaged. Its not a major task but would need the radius arm joints split to allow the hub to swing away enough to release the shaft. Be prepared for the front diff to leak oil when removing the shaft unless its flange mounted on a ring of small bolts. Don't drive it until its fixed, you risk a wheel lock up which is not good news.

I'm preparing to remove front right axle shaft (Cv half shaft) in a 1998 ford Escort zx2 with ABS and Auto trans. Is it held in the transmission by a spring ring or a snap ring?

It is held in by a spring ring. You need a good strong pry bar and you position it between the hub of the axel and the case of the trans and **** hard pulling it out. It sometimes is seated well, but keep trying. It will fight you sometimes.

Hope this helps.

How do you change the front left axel on a 1993 buick regal custom. It is making a clicking nois going in revers and forward a t low speeds

This is called a cv shaft. First jack the car up and support the vehicle with jack stands. This is for safety. Then remove the wheel and the brake caliper. you need to unbolt the tie rod end and separate it from its housing. You also need to unbolt the strut from the hub assembly. You might alos have to remove the bolt from the ball joint and remove it from the hub. In the center of the hub assembly is a large nut that will also have to be remove. This is actually holding the cv shaft to the bearing inside the hub. once you have removed the cv shaft from the hub, give it a straight hard **** away fromthe trans. There is a little c clip on the other end of the cv shaft which keeps it inside the trans. If the cv shaft separates into two pieces, this is ok. Take a small pry bar or flat head screw driver and place it between the part of the cv shaft left in the trans and the case. Be gentle but lightly pry against the cv shaft and it should come out of the trans. Reverse the order of disassembly and bang your done.

I have movement in the rear wheels on a 2003 Ford Mustang.Do I need to change the wheel bearings? How do I remve the hub?

Sounds as though your bearing could be bad, does your Differential have a cover on the back ?If so you'll have to remove it and remove the retainer rings (1) on each side of the inner axel .Then you should be able to remove the axels, but still may have to remove the Brake back cover also .Notice how much gear lube is left in the housing when you remove the cover . Don't forget to also replace the dust seals as well .
