From about a year until November last year, my carburated 1989 Accord Idled at 1000 RPMs A/C or not. Starting about a month ago, the idle dropped to 500 RPM without AC. With AC, RPMs rise to 750. It should idle at 750, 800-900 with AC. I have never tinkered with the throttle ajustment screw. Car performs great through the rev ranges, just settles too low. Spark plugs only 2 years old, all fluids filled just to capacity, oil only a month old. Air filter good, Carburator clean. I don't exacty trust the temp gauge which reads operating temperature once warmed up. Could this problem be brought on by overheating? I'm especially confused by how the problem came about so abruptly, and how it sat at 1000, then 500 out of nowhere with no tinkering onvolved, or a change in performance aside froom the idle. In choke (warm up) process, car idles anywhere from 1200 to 3000; way too high. Contradicting symptoms. Any ideas?
Never mind I fixed it. I replaced the thermostat, thermostat housing, temp. sender, temp. sensor, flushed the radiator, got a new water pump, new timing belt, and slightly adjusted the idle afterward via screw hidden in carburater. Replace the idle valve with a factory one and remove the negative battery negative cable for 5 minutes to reset the idle control system to base line settings.
/tom..only a half way back yard mec....i would spray some carb cleaner into the intake ..losen the hose going from air filter and spray directly into that...u have to gas it while spraying or it will die....then put a bottle of fuel injector into gas and fill up or as much as your wallett lets you ...drive and just MAYBE it will stop that up and down...fuel injectors may have clog...or...may be one of the 500 sensors that are on these hondas!
check the coolant level see if its moving away from the tank if so you could be leaking coolant ....................... i ment seeif its going down away from mark onthe tank
the idle surges if this is the case take out the air intake tube that leads to the throttle body, get a can of carburetor fluid and spray around the throttle body. You will need someone to start the car and hold the gas peddle to 2500 rpm while you do this the car will shut of when you do this, restart the car and repeat the process until half of the can is used up. Now check your antifreeze level fill if needed.
The idle speed for my 88 accord lx is 700-850 rpm for standard idle speed. The stalling is a seperate issue. When were plugs, wires, air/gas filters and distributor last checked? How long has engine been running for when you stall? Is the temprature gauge high? Any lights coming on when stall occurs? I am not a mechanic, but a DYI'er. These are common questions I am always asked when troubleshooting my Honda. :)
Carburated engines of that year may have an idle screw adjuster. You can see the screw from the outside of the carb. If so, try adjusting the carburator with a screwdriver. Unlike fuel injected Engines they can be manually adjusted.
a shimmy if you stomp on the gas and then let off quickly do you hear a large clunk if so prob a motor mount if the shimmy is a low idle engine loping or rpm up and down at low idle its prob the egr valve hope this helps
