The tapping is the valves hitting against the buyer upper part of engine. The stalling is most likely the computer shutting down engine. You might have engine damage. The tapping comes and goes according to engine rpm the higher the rpm the louder the tapping. If I was have it towed to u mechanic and have them run test engine might be beyond repair
For trouble shooting, install a fuel pressure gauge an allow it to sit near the windshield wipers while you attempt to make it stall. Does the FP drop while turning?
well i dont think its a major job but i think the feed pipe could be leaking ,when the oil is under pressure its closing up a union somewhere ,but when pressure drops it leaks ,couldnt tell you where or how without a good inspection ,could evan be the rack and pinion but without a good look ?? .Anyway if your good with computers you could always answer a few questions on here to help out ??
The engines oil pressure switch has a third wire which is connected to the fuel pump. The oil pressure gauge may work although the third wire to the pump may be at fault causing your delimma Once the engines oil pressure reached the normal operating range the computer shuts down the oil switches third wire to the pump and the relay takes over until you shut the emgine off
It is probably a oil pressure problem. If there is some sort of small blockage in an oil journal it could stop oil from flowing to the lifters which would cause the the tapping noise. at this point the best thing to do would be to try and flush out the engine with some sort of desludging agent. One thing i usualy do is drain the oil and re-fill it with atf and run it for about half an hour or an hour and then re-drain and replace with normal engine oil. transmission fluid contains tonnes of detergents and should help clean out any blockages.
Try pulling the relay's in the engine compartment and sand the connetors for the fuel pump after see if it comes on, turn the key to the run postion and listen for 2 second hum. aslo put in Lucas fuel stablizer if it's been sitting for any leangh of time.
replace the oil prssure light sending unit 1st, if the problem is not fixed by this then have the oil press checked with a manual guage to assure that u have correct pressure..
