Engine rpm surging / fluctuating chevy truck 1500

Coming off a 250 mi trip with no problems, when at a stoplight, engine RPM becomes erratic and fluctuates between 1000 and 2500 RPM with associated stumbling on acceleration. No problem at idle, and after being driven slowly the problem goes away. at speeds up to 50 mph,, only to return on acceleration or going uphill..

Try checking for vaccum leaks, use carb cleaner and spray it around the base of carb, vaccum hoses, edges of intake manifold, take pliers and squeeze the big line to brake power booster & see if it changes, pull the pcv valve out and cover with your finger see if it changes idle.

SOURCE: engine starts,reaches high rpm,then slowly returns

Vacuum leaks. Check all hoses and intake bolts. Leaking EGR or plugged PCV valve. Air filter plugged. Leaking head gasket. Worn timing chain. Camshaft lobes worn. Valves burned or leaking. Fuel idle control system or sensor. Good luck!

Well there are quite a few things that casue a "surge" in a common rail diesel. You will need to check injector flow rates (scanner only). Fuel pressure regulator for pulsing (scanner only). Supply side fuel system for air leaks (seeing if it is sucking air into the system).
My bet would be the injectors, because you say the rpms aren't going up and down, which is usally what happens when the regulator goes bad, and when you **** air into the supply they have an extended crank. Report back with your findings.

You should remove inspect and clean the idle control valve on the throttle body. This can become clogged over time, or the motor itself can become worn and may need replacing.

03 Mazda Tribute's charging indicator light begins flashing on and off when engine reaches 1200 rpm and becomes contineously on at and above 1500 rpm. With engine idling or decelerating to below 1200 rpm...

It may be that the light is being tripped due to an "over voltage" condition. The faster you spin the alternator/engine the higher the voltage output of the alternator. I would test the voltage coming out of the alternator. It should be at about 14.3v or so max. If it gets into the 16v+ range when you increase the engine RPM then the voltage regulator has failed and needs to be replaced.

Engine surges at rpm over 1500

Look for a vacuum leak (lines and intake), Is the engine light on, were any codes present? A faulty EGR or IAC could cause the problem too. Check the throttle cable for any restrictions.
