Automatic Transmission shifts late and rough after warm

Chevy Caprice 1994 w/ new distributor, check engine light comes on and off around the same time that it has trouble getting out of 1st and 2nd gears (automatic). Giving plenty of gas it does shift but lurching forward and not smooth. Doesn't have this problem when cold. Transmission fluid level and quality are fine. I have a 1991 chevy caprice classic, it had been sitting for a few months and I decided to put it on the road. The first 5 miles everything was fine. I had stopped and started again and noticed that it wouldn't shift out of 1st gear until you wound up the rpms about 5 grand. this was the same for 2nd gear also. But the car has no problems down shifting. All fluid levels are good. Could this be a clogged filter problem?

Try servicing the tranny fluid if not changing the fluid, if the problem has existed too long it may be time for a new tranny.

1989 Chevrolet Caprice

Check the computer controlled idle valve or motor. And clean it and the air passages it controls with a sensor safe cleaner. Throttle body cleaner or intake cleaner made by CRC (at Napa) works good. Check for a dirty air filter.

1995 chevy caprice classic 4.3 v8 I have put new plugs, wires, coil, distributor cap, and all sensors on this car. When its cold it runs like a new one, when it gets hot it wants to skip. What could be wrong?

4.3 enginges have a notorious ploblem with the distributor failing exspecially when engine is warm. If this car has the optical distributor the optics inside fail.

I have a 96 caprice that won't start and when I try it pops and backfire

Sounds from your description that your timing chain has jumped, and your crankshaft to camshaft timing is out.

Trans not shifting

your transmission has a vacumn modulator on the side it requires vacumn from the engine to shift make sure the vacumn hose from the trans to the engine is plugged on and working, if that is correct then step 2 is the governer which would require a tranny shop to check, but id bet on the vacumn line give it a try! good luck and thankx billy

Automatic Transmission shifts late and rough after warm

If it has over 60000 miles it may need a transmission service, which includes a filter and fluid change, fluid may look fine but if filter is clogged and not picking up fluid fast enough when u give it gas the pump spins faster and forces fluid thru to shift, more fluid is needed to shift into higher gear.than to drive
