SOURCE: Ignition key will not turn

Thanks to the person with the wd40 suggestion. stuff that little red tube right up there and liberally spray. I just had the panic when I went to drive to the store in my 98 town & country and the key didn't turn. I read lots of varying solutions and was ready to get the emergency locksmith out here to replace the barrel and then I stumbled across that suggestion here. It made so much sense...and it worked. The barrel will probably still need to be replaced at some point, but not urgent.
thanks again!

Try shooting some wd-40 in the tumbler, and working the key around a bit. If have another key, I would try that as well. If that does not work for you, you may have to replace the "ignition tumbler".

SOURCE: need to replace ignition lock cylinder

HI, There is a cheaper option, You could try to change the barrel yourself, it's not that hard you need to be mechanically minded & carefull of the key-immobiliser receiver unit & any wiring, as the immobiliser key pickup is normally a plastic unit wrapped around the barrel. Also you dont need to re-programme the unit you can either swap the emmitter's in the key's, some are just a small capsule, or you could just start the car with the other key on the keyring, depaending on the range of the emmitter you should get away with it, last resort tape the keys back to front !
But if you are considering getting rid of the car then having a go at taking the old ignotion unit apart should'nt matter & you might find that simply stripping the unit oiling and re-assembling may work plus it will give you an idea how hard it is to replace, if the unit is faulty then you just have to re-trace your step's & re-assemble the new unit, take note's along the way!
Also to take some panels & part's off you might need a torx driver set (star shaped) but if you just have trim screw's that are torx you can use allen key's most time's, I've usually got away with using them when without my set!
Hope this help's!
Any questions just post!

SOURCE: Locked Ignition but steering wheel free

Push gear selector up past park and it should loosen up, or press hard on the brake pedal. Shifter up past park usually loosens it up. Common GM problem.

How to remove key lock cylinder

  • Insert your key in the ignition and turn the key to the "ACC," or "Accessories," position.

  • Insert a straightened paper clip into the small, circular slot to the left of the ignition slot.

  • Turn the key to the "Off" position.

  • Pull gently on both the paper clip and the key to slide the cylinder out of its slot. You can then remove the paper clip and pull the key out of the removed cylinder.

Ignition will not turn in either direction

    Probably is.
The tumblers in the lock cylinder may have jammed.
You might try another key, and spray some WD40 or Liquid Wrench into the lock. Make sure there is no excessive pressure on the lock from the steering wheel.
You'll probably need to have the lock cylinder replaced.

Lock cylinder is stuck, I can put key in there, but cant turn it. When I wanna take it off, it doesn work cause Iam unable to turn to position where I can put away cylinder.

Are you asking about the door lock cylinder or the ignition switch?
If its the door try some wd40 in there.
And for both, make sure you try another key too.
If you have already tried these and answer the questions above I may be able to farther help you.

Trying to change the ignition switch on a 1996 Subaru Impreza. I can't get the key to turn to the accessory position to release the pin so I can pull it out

there are only two ways to remove the ignition lock cylinder, either by turning the key and pressing the realease button to remove the lock cylinder or to drill the center of the pin or the lock cylinder itself to remove the part. i would not suggest drilling the lock cylinder on your own unless you've had some experience in the art of locksmithing. have you tried lubricating the the lock cylinder to free it up and maybe get it to turn?

Ignition and steering wheel on 1996 Corsica are locked.

Your key or the lock cylinder may be overly worn, to the extent that the key no longer moves the pins to the correct positions to allow the cylinder to rotate.

Assuming that the lock cylinder hasn't been progressively getting more difficult to turn, you may be able to aggressively rotate the steering wheel against the lock back and forth while attempting to rotate the key to disengage a frozen steering lock.

My wife tried to to start her 2004 cavalier with the wrong key, and now the ignition will not turn with the right key

    Hello foxrider.
Chances are when the wrong key was put in it may have damaged the lock tumblers.
The lock cylinders on these cars are enough of a problem using proper keys. Not very well made to begin with.
You could try a very light oil such as WD40 to lubricate the tumblers in case 1 may be stuck up into the barrel of the cylinder and gently run the key in and out several times.
Jiggling the key inside the cylinder will sometimes loosen them up too.
If you do get it working it may be a good idea to replace the cylider and key soon as it may fail you again.
I hope you succeed in getting it to turn, otherwise it may be a job for a locksmith.
    Good luck with it.
