99 Dodge stratus blows the fuse to the starter.

Every time I try to start the vehicle the ign. fuel/starter fuse blows. Following the Fuse Link to the starter looks okay. I know I have a head gasket leak and some oil leaked down to the starter. There is a film of oil on the starter and both of the leads that connect to the starter. Could this be why the fuse is blowing?

I have removed the starter and cleaned it off. The secondary lead was really saturated with oil. I cleaned that up as well. Since I cleaned that up and reinstalled the starter, everything has been perfect. Thanks for the help.

Starter could have gotten saturated and leaked into the starter. Take starter to part store to have tested. If leaked in it could short. Or the windings could have blown just enough to cause it to short.

I have a 2004 dodge stratus that has power to lights but does not turn over when i try to crank even after jumping it off.

Hi.

Check ignition switch fuse. This is a 20 Amps. see that it has not blown. In 2004 Fuse should be nr 8 in the power box under the hood (newer models #24).

Once you are sure that battery, fuse and wires are OK, check starter and ignition switch. Check if there is 12V to starter while cranking. If there is power and the starter motor does not turn, then the motor is gone.
If there is no power to starter motor when you crank, then the ignition switch located inside the steering column may need replacement. Before repairing, try reading error codes with a code scanner.

My 1999 dodge stratus did the same thing. Its a short in the starter solenoid its attached to the starter. all you have to do is change the starter.

20 amp ignition fuse keeps blowing

I'm curious, does this vehicle have an alarm/remote starter? If so I expect the installer didn't wire it correctly ... it was an all too frequent issue, with inexperienced installers we had .... I would first suspect any add-on device first (if any) ... In answer to your question ... I know it does have a relay (Starter solenoid is a relay and built onto the starter) As far as it being a relay or the IGN switch ... I'm skeptical.

1998 Dodge Stratus

i think you have corroded wires around the fuel pump harness creating a short circuit which is probably blowing the fuse.

98 stratus won't start

Check the fuel shutoff valve. to see if it is on. press the reset button to do this. if it stays on. The answer could be pinched wires (a short) from the fuse wiring back towards the shutoff valve. if the valve shuts off try checking for current with a test light. if no current . The valve is bad. it seems like a short or open circuit on the fuel system wiring.
