Pontiac sunfire gt 2.4 liter motor 1997 have slippage between all gears automatic transmission had both relays on the trans check they are in good shape. I am told there is a modular on the side of the trans that is prolly going. Ad or my clutches the car runs great other than the trans problem. When shifting rpms seem to be 10 to 15 hundred over where it normally would shift. When driving if I slowly accelerate and let off the gas at shifting point it shifts fine same if you drive it grandma style still late shifts but no slamming or hard engagement of the trans. Has very little get up and go. This problem happend one day out of no where. Any help would be much apreciated!!!!!

SOURCE: Transmission won't shift fron 1st, 2nd or 3rd correctly!

I'm no expert but it sounds as if you might have some moisture (water) contaminating your tranny fluid. I'd first try having it drained, flushed and refilled with fresh fluid. Preferably after it has been warmed to room temperature - -2 brrr.

SOURCE: transmission is not shifting gears while driving

First check fluid level. is check engine light on? is speedometer working? this can be caused by a malfuncition vehicle speed sensor or a mechanical condition such as a clogged filtre.

SOURCE: My saturn was running fine. Then it would shift very hard

well if it shifts very hard into every gear that means the pressure control solenoid in the trans went bad and it causing the trans to go to max line pressure thats why it shifts so hard,,,it does that so you can still drive it even thou it broken, anyhow the PC solenoid is under the trans pan which is on the TOP of the trans under the battery,,,,not too hard a job to do, the parts are about $100 labor might be about $200,,,easy fix,,could be alot more,,,and if you dont fix it ,it will break other stuff in the trans and cost alot more,,,

SOURCE: I have a 1966 Ford Falcon with a C4 transmission.

I would begin by replacing the filter if its not new, 2 possibility of issue, faulty shifting module or defective transmission rebuilt. just because it has been rebuilt does not mean the individual work on it did a good job. the less cost effective way is to locate used modulator from ebay or junk yard, if that does not rectified the issue than more likely it will be the tranny. the bad part is that I dont know of a company offer a bench test for the tranny modulator.

1997 pontiac sunfire automatic transmission vacauum madgulator location

No vacuum modulator on this transmission. Even if it did, a bad vacuum modulator only works during the 1-2 shift. It would not affect ability to drive from 0-mph

What kind of auto trans fluid

The 2003 Sunfire has been updated from Dexron II or III to Dexron VI per a Technical Service Bulletin from GM.

Automatic Transmission, 4T40-E Initial Fill..........6.5 liters
Automatic Transmission, Total Fill 4 speed 4T40-E..........12.2 liters

Good luck and hope this helps, if you do use Synthetic transmission oil, make sure it's a Low Viscosity Synthetic Transmission oil. High viscosity transmission oil will cause the gear shifting to stick and will cause shifting issues.

Thank you for using fixya and good luck.

How much transmission fluid does a 1998 sunfire gt 4 speed auto take? I've changed the oil and don't know for sure how much to put back in?

3.8 in the pan and about 6-8 liters in the tran if it is a downstairs check plug then its is pritty easy to check. There is a little 11ml bolt on the right side of the tran pan that you pull out while the car is running and in park if fluid comes out your good, if not top it up cycle the gears and try again. best of luck

Looking to do a motor swap in a 98 sunfire...what motors fit?

It is true, you can only put another 98 2.2 liter in it. They did come with a 2.4 liter but you have to swap the motor, transmission, wiring harness, computer, and God knows what else. I would go with the 2.2 liter and check into some performance aftermarket parts for the 2.2, computer chip, performance exhaust and so on, somewhere like Summit Racing.

My 2000 pontiac sunfire with a 2.4 motor and a 5 speed manual tranny will go in to all gears however if trying to drive the only gears you can move the car in is 5th and reverse , all other gears act as...

Check the cables and shift linkages. If they are all good then it could be time to replace the trans.unless you know someone that is a good trans mechanic. You could price out a used one from the salvage yard.Hope this helps.Good luck.

Check with chevy a dealership service (phone call) , there are 2 different types if your car is an automatic. If your car is a standard , it could be gear lube , or even Automatic trans fluid.
